Many years ago, a rich man found that someone took valuable things from his house. He locked all the doors and all the windows. Still the things disappeared. It must be one of the servants! How could he catch the servant? He got a good idea. After dark, he called all the servants together, ―There is a thief in the house, but I know how to catch him.‖ He said. ―In the next room there is a square box. In that box there is a chicken. The chicken is magic. Each of you must go into the room by yourself. It is quite dark in the room. You must feel your way to the table and press the first finger of your right hand on the top of the box. If you are not the thief, nothing will happen. If you are the thief, the chicken will make much noise; everyone in the house will hear it.‖ Some of the servants did not want to do this. They were afraid of the magic chicken. But they had to do it. If they had done nothing wrong, they had nothing to worry about. So the servants went into the dark room one at a time, while the others listened carefully. However, the chicken made no sound. ―Good,‖ said the rich man. ―Now I know who the thief is!‖ The servants looked very surprised. ―How me your right hands! The chicken did not make sound for a very good reason. There is no chicken in the box at all! But the top of the box was covered with paint. You all have paint on your fingers, except one person. Thousands of years ago,all people had to collect seeds and plants to eat. They did not know how to farm or keep animals for food. As they used stone tools and weapons(武器)then, we call them the Stone Age people.

There are people who still live in places that are hard to reach. Because they have met few people from the outside world, they do not know about modern inventions. They have not traded ways of doing things with others. For 25,000 years, groups of people have lived alone in the middle of Australia. One of these groups is the Arunta tribe(部落). They do not know how to farm, nor do they keep sheep or cows. The Aruntas spend most of their time searching for food and water. The men hunt animals with stone-tipped spears(矛). The women and children look for roots, seeds, and nuts. They use sticks to dig up the roots. Several Arunta families live together. They have no houses. At night, they sleep around the small fires. More Than a Helping Hand

For most people, advances (进步) in technology make life more fun.

For example, the latest iPod or digital camera can bring excitement to your life. However,

they are not essential;you would certainly get by without them. Can you imagine if technology could not just make your life more interesting but change it completely? This is exactly what the 1atest advances are doing to the 1ives of the disabled people. Technology allows such people to live independently, making impossible tasks seem normal.

Take, for example, the iBOT 3000. This is the SUV(越野车) of wheelchairs. Not only can it handle(应付)parks and dirt roads, but it can even climb stairs. This gives its users the freedom they have always dreamed of ---- to go wherever they want, whenever they want. Computers also make it easier for people with disabilities to work. Some, such as large screen texts or special keyboards for the blind, are simple and common.

But the most important technological advances are yet to come. Swiss researchers are developing computers that can read brain waves which can move a mouse on the screen to select choices. Of course, they need to have wires linked to their heads, but that will change soon as well.

This technology will provide endless possibilities for people whose bodies no longer function(运行). They will be able to use their minds to control their wheelchair or write a letter. They will even be able to order their robot to cook them a meal or brush their teeth. Now that’s essential technology. ( ) 51. What does the underlined phrase ―get by‖ mean in Chinese?
