When people move to another country, some of them decide to follow the customs of the new country. Others prefer to keep their own customs. Compare these two choices. Which one do you prefer? Support your answer with specific details.
It is against my will to arbitrarily separate local and international customs since the contemporary world is the one featured with multi-culture as well as eclecticism instead of rejecting exotic civilization under the disguise of Chauvinism.
After settling down in an unfamiliar culture, an immigrant may uncritically follow a safer lifestyle or values he used to abide by, usually on the pretext of patriotism. Nevertheless, the true intention for them to do so is to conceal their sense of trepidation into an unacquainted context
or the inferiority complex of being marginalized by aboriginals. As a result, this group of exotic residents are naturally excluded and, under quite usual circumstances, keeping integrating into their own sub-cultural circles, like the Dragon City ( an area dominated by Chinese) in Toronto.
However, it is noteworthy that some immigrants attach themselves to their local customs for religious purposes. For example, it is impossible for a follower of the Prophet to accept pork, no matter how long he has been in relationship with Chinese culture. And the same logic /by the same token, can also be applied to other religious situations.
Nevertheless, the above assertion about religious factor is just an exception in analyzing whether an immigrant should
accept new customs. In fact, the cases of acculturation are often associated with the willingness and unwillingness to do so or not. If possible, an immigrant, I suggest, ought to familiarize himself with the civilization of his adopted country with might and main, since only in this way can he get melted into the mainstream society. Besides, the amalgamation is effective to eliminate his sense of loneliness and emptiness.`
In brief, it is my unmovable faith that the effort that an immigrant invests to tying himself up to the culture of his adoptive country should be made. (296)

Nowadays it is quite common for people to immigrate to ther countries. When they move, some of them decide to follow the customs of the new country while others prefer to keep their own. If I were forced to agree with one of the two positions, my
choice would be the former.
To illustrate my point, let us first take a look on why some people dislike the idea of following the customs of the new country. For one thing, these people are so accustomed to their own culture, religion and customs, and it is very hard for them to accept the new cultures. For instance, people from a Islamic country may find a lot of customs in western countries offensive.
Although I agree that some customs are hard to change, I insist that the advantages of adapting to a new culture are apparently seen. In the first place, by following the customs of the new country, you can learn about the country and understand the people more easily and become a real member of the country. People who stick to their way of life may sometimes feel
lonely and isolated. To share the same custom means that having more things in common, and it can pull people together. Furthermore, you have to adapt to some customs of the new country, if they are written into the law. As a result, it is much more sensible to do as the Roman do.
In conclusion,I believe that the advantages of following the customs of the new country is obvious because you can easily learn about the country and be a real member of it. What is more, you can live more easily in a foreign country.

Some people adapt quickly to the customs of a new country while others keep their own customs. How do they decide? It's a difficult choice, and the decision is not always conscious. Many practical and
social factors influence people.
Very often it depends on age. Older people have spent a lifetime doing things a certain way. Their social customs are part of who they are as people. It's very hard for them to start doing things differently. The younger generation finds it easier to leave behind the culture of their native country and adapt to the customs of their new country. They're not as set in their ways as adults are. Children also feel the pressure to fit in from the other kids in school.
A major part of adapting to the customs of a new country is learning that country's language. Children learn the language in school, and use it all day while going to class and playing with other children. But many times adults coming to a new country don't have time for formal language classes. Their first priority is
getting a job. Sometimes they work with people from their own country, and they don't-have to use the new language. Or they may find a job that doesn't require much speaking at all. This means even if they're trying to learn the language, they don't have a lot of opportunities to practice it.
Another way of adapting to the customs of a new country has to do with how family members interact. Different countries have different ideas about how family members should relate to each other. Sometimes the adults will oppose changing what was normal in their native country. This can be a difficult adjustment to make, especially if their children are visiting new friends at home and seeing how different things are in the new country.
I believe that people who want to make
their home in a new country need to find a balance. They should keep the best of their native culture and adopt the good things they find in their new country.
some people think visitors to other countries should imitate local custom and behaviors. other people disagree that the host country should welcome culture diversity. to what extend do you agree?
identifying the foreign customs is a difficult task/demanding job for any visitors. cultural conflicts may occur when one does not know much about the strange social codes other than his own country. in reality, people’s opinion about whether the host country should encourage cultural differences or to what degree should they accept the alien cultures as they may cause annoyance to them. in my opinion, i insist that the local customs should be highly respected in many occasions but not
necessarily be followed blindly. Imported religion
the primary concern is given to the significance of one’s national traditions and heritage that has been passed down. it is important because all these customs has undergone thousands of years of practice and become the treasure of a nation. for instance, the eating tradition in many areas and regions such as people eat red eggs when they have a new baby, eating jiaozi—a kind of chinese dumpling when we celebrate chinese lunar year, and still eating when someone’s grandpa passed away. this might be a blunt for many visitors who first come here. visitors in such a situation may choose to practice as if he were a local or he may just see and enjoy the atmosphere.
even if visitors keep a stance away from the traditions of a foreign country, they
should not be hostile to them. the reason is simple. if the visitors refuse to take the fact that the local customs may offend their faith or something they believe, and even they are disheartening, they will possibly act improperly under such situation. take eating out custom as example, chinese people when eating out, there are always a person who masters the table and even pays the bill. this might be offensive to a foreign who does not get used to this manner. but as we chinese people say” ru xiang sui su” literally means that one should get used to the local customs when visiting it, this is a reflection of what we discuss here about the culture diversity.
in general, one should see how he knows about the cultures and how he should react upon it. there are no fixed rules to be followed. what seems important is “when
in rome; do as the romans do” philosophy applies to many situations when one feel uncertain about the host culture.
范文4
What is a culture? Although there is no an agreement about the definition of culture, people generally consider it to be the ways people eat, play, dress, drink, think, and work. When one person travels in a foreign country, the foreign culture/alien culture is not necessarily completely incompatible with his or her native/domestic ways. Therefore, it is not always true to do in Rome as a Roman Does.
If one travels in a public culture, that is, where the social order, economic and other relationships between people are maintained by laws rather than by custom or kinship, it is safe for the traveler to do
things in his or her own ways, because the public culture welcomes different or even conflict opinions, people, and ways. Take New York, the big pot, as a typical case in point. In this city everybody has an angle and everyone has the right to do whatever delights him or her in case that it is not illegal.
If one travels in a folk culture, however, it is better to do in Rome as Romans do. A folk culture is a culture featured by clans, kinships, and customs. In a folk culture different ways of doing things are less welcomed. In such a culture, if one remains his or her own ways of doing things, hardly can he or she be able to enjoy the journey. Worse, the traveler might be in the deep troubled water. Non-tangible cultural heritage/heriloom
Therefore, whether one must follow the
new ways of doing things and whether one must keep the native culture depend on a variety of specific conditions.
