Many Americans have been leaving their cars at home and riding to work on bicycles. They are doing this because of gas prices, a slowing economy and concerns about the environment. Andy Clark is the executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. His group supports bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation.

Mister Clark says this is good news for the environment. He says riding a bicycle to work does not burn fossil fuel or create dangerous pollutants. Experts say the effects are the most important on short trips. The Department of Transportation says fifty percent of Americans drive eight kilometers or fewer to work. Shorter car trips release more pollution into the air for each kilometer driven. This is because the device in a car that produces the harmfulness of emissions needs to warm up before it can work well. Last year, the Pacific Northwest city of Portland, Oregon, had the highest percentage of bicycle commuters(通勤者) in the United States. Portland has been doing progressive city planning for many years to create special paths for bike riders. Andrew Land is one of Portland’s citizens who bikes to work every day. Mister Land is thirty-three years old and has never owned a car. He has biked to work for twelve years. Before moving to Portland six years ago, he lived in Washington D.C. But he was hit by a car twice while biking to work there. That has not happened in Portland where there are special; roads for bicycles. Mister Land bought a house near these special bike lanes. He rides almost five kilometers to work each day. He also uses the sixty-four kilometer bike path around the city.

Andrew Land rides a cyclocross bike. He says it combines the best parts of a racing bike and a mountain bike. You might say that Andrew Land is “ into bikes”. He recently attended a show of handmade bicycle frames (结构)。 It was organized by thirty bicycle frame

C. Shorter trip cars waste too much fuel 57. What can be inferred in the third paragraph? A. Portland has more bikes than any other city in the USA B. The people in Portland are very poor C. The traffic in Portland is very good D. Cars are not allowed to run in Portland

58. Why Andrew Land was hit by a car twice while biking to work in Washington D.C? A. Because he was too careless B. Because there were no special paths for bike riders C. Because the road there was too crowded

D. Because he just did it for fun B. Shorter trip cars are usually bad ones

D. Shorter trip car drivers are not skilled

59. What is the suitable meaning of “ into bikes” in the last paragraph? A. He is fascinated with bikes B. He lives in a house made from bikes C. he likes to run into bikes D. He is good at making bikes B

Children are a secret weapon for making investment decisions. In a nod to the wisdom of youth, many wealthy and well-educated technology investors are seeking advice and investment tips from their children, summer interns(实习生) and twenty something receptionists.

Unlike the formal consumer tests that focus groups at large companies, these inquiries are taking place closer to home, with friends and family. But their impact can be broad, because investors not only help promote the development of new ideas but also invest billions of dollars in those ideas on behalf of investment groups and wealthy individuals.

These investors say there is a good reason to ask young people to help them assess new technology: as the investors themselves are aging, the technology ----including social networking websites and mobile gadgets--- is designed for, used by and sometimes built by people half their age.

And the trend may indicate the rise of something new in the venture capital industry itself. The investors said asking the younger people for advice would have been unheard of in the dot-boom of the 1990s. Then, investors were engaged themselves in the very technology they were financing, ordering books on Amazon, downloading music from Napster and buying and selling on eBay. But now, in the so-called Web 2.0 era, investors’ personal interests have strayed away from new innovation: websites like Myspace intended to connect people, free Internet calling tools like Skype or software for mobile phones.

And people now in junior school and high school have spent their lives with technology. “ This is the first generation for whom the computer is a native language,” said Jim Gauer, managing director of Palomar Ventures, a Los Angeles firm. “ We are all going to have to get re-educated and learn that language.”

Or they can do what Palomar have done: hire a native speaker . Last summer, the firm had an intern, Adam Gottesfeld, 21, who was heading into his senior year at Princeton. Mr Gottesfeld so impressed the firm with his technological knowledge that it has offered him a job as an associate when he graduates.

60. What is the passage mainly about? A. Investors have difficulty in making wise decisions to make money. B. The young will perform better than today’s investors in terms of making decisions. C. Investors have turned to the young to generate new ideas and test their decisions. D. Children with impressive technology knowledge can become investors themselves..

61. About those technology investors, which of the following statements might NOT be correct? A. They are falling behind present technology compared with the younger generation. B. They often conduct some consumer test in large corporations and companies. C. They were once the pioneers of new technology in the 1990s. D. They have realized the importance and potentiality of the younger generation. 62. We can learn from the passage that .

A. the younger generation has long been regarded as investment consultant. B. the young today are speaking a different kind of language today.

C. the young equipped with advanced technological knowledge may find promising jobs

Do you love holidays but hate the increase weight that follows? You are not alone. Holidays are happy days with pleasure and delicious foods. Many people, however, are worried about the weight that comes along with the delicious foods. With proper planning, though, it is possible to control your weight. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don’t have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy. The following suggestions may be of some help to you.

Do not miss meals. Before you leave home for a feast, have a small, low-fat snack. This may help to keep you from getting too excited before delicious foods.

Begin with clear soup and fruit or vegetables. A large glass of water before you eat may help you feel full .Use a small plate; a large plate will encourage you to have more than enough. Better not have high-fat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy have much fat in them.

Choose lean meat. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables. If you have a sweet tooth , try mints (薄荷) and fruits .They don’t have fat content as cream and chocolate.

Don’t let exercise take a break during the holidays. A 20-minute walk after a meal can help burn

off excess calories. 64. In order to really enjoy your holidays without putting on weight, you’d better__________. A. drink much water and have vegetables only B. not eat much food in high-fat C. not accept invitations to feasts D. turn away from delicious foods 65. “Hey, little buddy, will you support me when I’m getting old?” Han Wenshan, 35 years old, asked his new-born baby as he picked him up at home.

The Chinese tradition of raising sons to support parents in their old age has been weakened by the rapidly growing economy and improved standard of living. As is the case with developed countries, China faces an aging society. People are living longer and having fewer children. Therefore many Chinese families are falling into a 4-2-1 family pattern: a couple raises one child and supports four elderly parents. But few realize this problem.

The aging of the population is a trend that now affects a growing number of countries. Not long ago, the Information Office of the State Council, China’s cabinet, issued a white paper on measures China is taking to help its elderly population. The paper said China’s population entered the aging phrase at the end of the 20th century as the proportion of people aged 60 and above accounted for over 10 percent of the entire population. By the end of 2005, China had nearly 144 million people over 60, accounting for 11 percent of the population, according to the white paper.

An expanding aged population inevitably means that many issues must be settled, as the problem concerns every aspect of society. It puts more pressure on each family, causing disturbing economic consequences and serious social problems. It also challenges the labor force supply and the pension(养老金) system.

“I used to think that it’s not an issue for me to provide for the aged.” said Han, whose parents and parents-in-law all enjoy pensions and medical insurance. But last year Han’s father suffered a serious illness and afterward Han began to feel the pressure on his shoulders. 67. Which of the following is not caused by an aging society?

A. Unemployment B. The problem of the pension system C. Social problems. D. More pressure on the family. 68. From the passage we can infer ___________.

A. many people haven’t realized the problem of an aging society B. children will not support their parents in an aging society

C. the aging problem is one of the concerns for the Chinese government

You may have heard the term “the American Dream”. In 1848, James W. Marshall found gold in California and people began having golden dreams. That 19th century “American Dream\motivated the Gold Rush and gave California its nickname of the “Golden State”.

The American Dream drove not only 1800s gold-rush prospectors(采矿者)but also waves of immigrants throughout that century and the next. People from Europe, and a large number of Chinese, arrived in the US in the 19th century hoping that in America they would find gold in the streets. But most, instead, worked as railroad laborers. They created the oldest Chinatown, in San Francisco, and gave the city a Chinese name “the old gold hill”.

In the 20th century, some critics said that it was no longer possible to become prosperous through determination and hard work. Unfair education for students from poor families and racial discrimination almost made the American Dream a nightmare(噩梦).

Then, in the 1990s, California saw a new wave of dreamers in Silicon Valley. People poured their energy into the Internet. This new chapter of the American Dream attracted many business people and young talents from China and India to form start-ups and seek fortune in America. Better pay, a nice house, and a rising standard of living will always be attractive. However, the new American Dream is no longer just about money. It encourages Americans to consume wisely to protect the environment, improve the quality of life, and promote social justice.

The Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger has become the model of the new American Dream. After years of hard work, he grew from a poor young man from Austria into a super movie star and then a governor. Many people hope his story can save the American Dream and give California a brighter future.
