Topic: We should be blood donors

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen:

I am Hellen. It is a great honor for me to stand here to deliver my final speech on such a special day. Now I have a question for you. What special day is it today? Yeah, June 14th, 2013, the 10th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day. So is this a day for you? Are you a blood donor?

Access to safe blood is a key component of effective health care. But where does a safe blood supply come from? It comes from you. It comes from you. It comes from every volunteer. To make a brighter day, we can and should be a blood donor.

Blood is the most precious gift that one can give others. It is given by life and can be given to save lives. Two months ago, Ya’an earthquake took about 200 lives away and many people fell victims to it. Though stuff, such as food, clothes and tents, is necessary, blood appears to be more urgently needed to rescue the injured. Due to some diseases or malnutrition, many lovely children are suffering from anemia, blood is essential to ease their pain. Not a few women may have complications of pregnancy. If they lose too much blood during childbirth, they will be in great danger and blood is the only thing to save them. Blood also means “life” to people with various diseases of blood, such as sickle cell disease and hemophilia. Shall we just stand watching the

earthquake victims die for lack of blood supply, the innocent children tortured by the disease and the newborns lose their mother before having a glance at her? Definitely no. A simple decision to donate blood can prevent all these tragedies. So why not donate blood?

Not only can the recipients benefit from the donation, but also the donors themselves. To donate blood in a scientific way will speed up the blood metabolism, keep the blood fresh and healthy and reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease. One of my friends has been a regular blood donor for 5 years. She always tells me, “I’ve been stronger and not easy to get ill as I was before. And at the thought of many people benefiting from my blood, I cannot help feeling happy.” Yes, sense of satisfaction can also be gained from the contribution to saving lives. An international study also shows that the average life expectation of blood donors is about 3 years longer than the others. So why not donate blood?

A win-win as blood donation is, however, at present, voluntary blood donation is facing great challenges in China. According to a blood donation website of China, only 0.9% of the mainland population donates blood, which percent of the highly developed countries is about 5 times of ours. Data from the blood bank in Jiaxing city show that, in 2009, there were over 4600 college students voluntary donors; in 2010, about 2000 fewer; while in 2011, about 500 fewer than that of the year before. It is obvious that the number of college students donors, is sharply shrinking. And it is said from the beginning of 2012, except blood type B, all the other types have experienced a severe shortage. It is high time to give our blood.

Voluntary blood donation is a lofty cause, in which everybody counts. Now we are the backbone of our country and it is our bounded duty to devote ourselves to donating blood. It only takes us about 10 minutes but our benevolence may enable a person to live another ten years or

much longer. The needle and blood bag used to collect blood come in a sterile pack that cannot be reused, so the process is made as safe as possible. Dose it hurt? Just squeeze the inside of your elbow tightly and you will get a quick idea of what the needle feels like. And the volume of blood taken at a time is only 200 to 400 milliliters in China and it will not cause harm to our health. For more information about blood donation, welcome to consult me after class.

Now my fellow friends, our country is calling upon us, our people is counting upon us. Don’t hesitate any more. To be a blood donor, to be a real hero. Thank you.
