Recently, I found an old photo of my grandfather and me, taken in our garden in Balsall Heath, Birmingham. It reminded me of many memories of Grandfather. Throughout the summer he would spend whole days out in the garden, looking after his crops in the morning and sitting in the shade of a big tree in the afternoon. He always kept his watch on outside and took it off in the evening.

Grandfather always had a project going and would be in a great panic until it was done. He would start the job straight away and not rest until it was finished, and wouldn’t let any helpers rest either. Nothing ever piled up(堆积) with him.

When he had visitors, after a few hours he would start looking at his watch and tell them exactly when their bus was due. He had many timetables in his mind. Clock-changing time in our house was a major event for Grandfather. He would warn us days ahead and then change them the day before, throwing the house into confusion.

Grandfather worked hard all his life. He came to England from India in 1954 and worked long hours in a steel factory. He loved to tell us of his successes at work there, such as becoming a foreman(领班), his pay rising to £2 a week, the respect he had from colleagues and so on. While he was working there, he shared a house with other men who had also left their families in India and come to work in England. He told us the beds were constantly slept in – the night-shift workers in the day and the day shifters at night.

It is now ten years since he died. It doesn’t feel like he has been gone this long—having these memories of him is like having a secret box of treasure. Grandfather still makes and will forever make me smile.

56. Where did the author’s grandfather use to spend summer days?

A. In a factory. B. On a farm. C. In the house. D. In the garden. 57. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

A. The author’s grandfather wasn’t friendly to his visitors. B. The author’s grandfather always had a strong sense of time. C. The author’s grandfather liked looking at his watch frequently. D. The author’s grandfather often threw the house out of order.

58. According to the text, when the author’s grandfather worked in Britain, he didn’t . A. live with British men B. work long hours

C. get a pay raise D. gain the respect of colleagues 59. From the last paragraph we know that the author . A. has lost his grandfanther for 10 years B. has a secret box of treasure at home

C. feels pity for those who lost grandfathers D. can’t remember his grandfather well

60. The author writes the text mainly to . A. describe his grandfather’s garden B. introduce his grandfather’s watch C. share his memories of his grandfather D. praise the successes of his grandfather

For many blind people , computers are inaccessible(不可及的). It can cost $1,000 to purchase ― screen reader ‖ software , but two blind computer programmers from Australia have solved this problem .

Queensland University of Technology ( QUT) graduate James The and business partner Michael Curran developed a free , open-source program , called NVDA , which provides a voice to read the words on a computer screen as the cursor(光标)moves over them . NVDA won the blind inventors an award in the grand final program of the ABC’s New Inventors , which aired on September 23 . They took home the award for an invention that ― might make a real difference to people’s lives or the environment .‖

― A sighted person takes for granted that they can sit down at any computer and use it ,‖ Mr The said. ― We really are in the information age — everything is online these days . So access to computers for the blind is very important , which is why we wanted our software to be free . ‖

Mr Teh , who majored in software engineering at QUT , said blind students typically didn’t have the money to purchase ― screen reader ‖ technology , at the time in their life when they most needed it . Now NVDA could be downloaded on to anyone’s personal computer free of charge .

― It can also be copied to a USB stick , which can be used on any PC at school or university , with no installation(安装)required , ‖ he said .

Mr Teh and Mr Curran have drawn on their own experience as blind computer users to develop a product which has some unique features . For example , as the mouse moves up and down the screen , a sound becomes higher and lower to let you know where the cursor is located .

NVDA has been translated into 27 languages , thanks to volunteer translators . To date , there have been over 50 , 000 downloads .

Mr The and Mr Curran have been working on the project since 2006 . They worked on their product without any pay for two years . When Mozilla offered some funding in 2008 , Mr The was able to quit his day job and work full-time developing NVDA .

Albert Alexander, a 43-year-old police officer in Oxford, England, lay dying. He had slightly hurt his face on a thorn(刺) as he cut his rose bushes. But his face had become infected with deadly bacteria. Soon, injuries formed on his skin under the hair and in his eyes. Doctors even removed one of Alexander’s eyes. But the infection spread to his bones and lungs — a sure sign of death.

The doctors decided to try a new medicine. For most of human history, doctors had been unable to cure infections. Until the later 1800s scientists didn’t even know infections were caused by bacteria. But on February 12, 1941, Alexander began receiving the medicine that doctors hoped would, for the first time, give them the power to fight the bacteria sprading through his body.

After just one day, Alexander’s condition improved. But because the medicine passed through his body quickly, many dosed(剂量) were needed. The medicine was difficult to make,

第 5页 共 10页

however, and there was just a small supply. So volunteers collected Alexander’s urine(尿) and bicycled it from the hospital to the lab, where scientists obtained the precious medicine so it could again be injected into Alexander.

Despite the volunteers’ efforts, the supply ran out. Alexander had improved greatly, but without more medicine, the infection spread back and he died. The doctors were convinced, however, that he would have lived if they’d had enough medicine.

What was this wonderful new medicine? It was one you or someone in your family has probably taken many times-penicillin.

Although Albert Alexander died, other tests proved that penicillin relly could control bacteria. Before penicillin, a person with a bacterial disease could only wait and see whether his or her body’s immune system was strong enough to beat the bacteria. Thanks to penicillin, doctors were surprised to see patients who were seriously ill one day on the road to recovery the next. 66. What do we know about Albert Alexander according to the passage? A. He got infected with a bacterial disease. B. He survived because of a new medicine.

C. His eyes were removed because of eye disease. D. He hurt himself seriously when cutting roses.

67. When Alexander was injected with penicillin for the first time, he . A. seemed very worried B. didn’t get beeter at all

C. began to improve in health D. knew he needed a large supply of it 68. The underlined word ―they‖ in Paragraph 4 probably refers to .

A. the volunteers B. the scientists C. the doctors D. the patients 69. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Penicillin was put to use in the early 19th century.

B. Alexander’s disease could not be cured according to his doctors. C. Many people came to Alexander’s help when he was in hospital. D. Most people’s immune system is strong enough to beat bacteria. 70. The last paragraph is mainly about . A. the discovery of penicillin B. the importance of penicillin C. the common use of penicillin D. the development of penicillin
