It was very cold and I had been watching a homeless man make himself comfortable in a shelter on the river bank. His shelter was a tarpaulin(油布)tied to rocks to keep the wind from blowing it away. He had been living there for over a month. I never saw him with warm clothing or food. I knew what I wanted to do.

When I told my parents my plan they were alarmed. They said I could be putting myself at risk, taking a box to a homeless person at night! But I knew, in my deep heart, that I would be safe.

I got a box. My parents watched as I added warm gloves, a heavy blanket … into a box until it was full! Then, I put a Christmas card on top. It said, ---Even though we hardly know each other, I want to wish you a Merry Christmas! I put ten one-dollar bills inside it as well.

My father insisted he went there with me as it was 10 pm on Christmas Eve. I said he could drive me but he had to stay in the car. He agreed. I took the box and walked towards his “house”. I called.

---Sir, I have a Christmas box for you! ---Go away! he shouted. ---Sir, I repeated. ---Go away! he shouted. ---Why? I asked him.

He walked over and I saw two of the most beautiful, gentle, blue eyes I have ever seen.

---Merry Christmas! I said.

---Why are you doing this? he asked.

---Because you matter to me, I said. With that I gave him the box.

Tears came to his eyes and he thanked me. I got back to the car and watched him

When I was a little kid, one of my favorite things to do was going to the zoo. I have recently heard that there are debates as to whether elephants should live in zoos or should they wander around free. My position is that elephants should live in zoos for people to see.

Many experts say that elephants have a good life living in zoos. There are 78 zoos that exhibit elephants. Most zoos are taking the necessary steps to make living

conditions better for the elephants. They are doing things such as replacing hard floors with sand or dirt. This makes it easier for them to wander around. Zoos are also expanding their elephant house to give the large animals more room to go around.

Zoos also protect endangered species. According to the World Wildlife Fund, in 2014 the total population of African elephants was around 700,000, and the Asian elephant population was around 32,000.The Asian elephants are on a path to dying out. Without zoos, they all are likely to disappear within our lifetime. The National Zoo plans to spend millions of dollars on a new Asian elephant habitat. That way, they can start their own group if the Asian elephants are gone.

There are people who want zoos to empty all of their elephant displays. If they decide to do so, it would take the chance to see elephants up close away from people. That could change the public’s favorable opinion of elephants. National Zoo director John Berry says that allowing visitors to experience the elephants up close encourages people to care about endangered species. During one of my visits to the zoo, it was a very hot day. I was sweating a lot. Big Ben, the largest elephant on display, walked up to me and gently squirted (喷) my face with water from his trunk. Everyone was amazed at what he did. That was a very nice thing for Big Ben to do. I am sure that elephants are the nicest animals on earth. I wish all zoos would keep their elephant displays open to the public. I want all my friends to be able to experience what I did with Big Ben.

I feel zoos should follow all the necessary steps to keep elephants in zoos. I would raise money at my school if I thought it would help to keep elephants in zoo.

39. According to the passage, what do we know about the Asian elephants? A. They are living in a new habitat. B. They are at the risk of disappearing C. They prefer wandering on hard floors. D. They often squirt people’s face with water

Newborns begin to develop language skills long before they begin speaking. And, compared to adults, they develop these skills more quickly. People have a hard time learning new languages as they grow older, but babies have the ability to learn any language easily.

For a long time, scientists have tried to explain how such young children can learn the complicated grammatical rules and sounds of a language. Now, researchers are getting a better idea of what’s happening in the brains of the tiniest language learners. This new information might help kids with learning problems as well as adults who want to learn new languages. It might even help scientists who are trying to design computers that can communicate like people do.

Most babies go “ma ma” by 6 months of age, and most children speak in full sentences by age 3. For many years, scientists have wondered how the brains of young children figure out how to communicate using language. With help from new technologies, scientists are now finding that babies begin life with the ability to learn any language. They get into contact(接触) with other people, listen to what they say and watch their movements very closely. That is why they quickly master the languages they hear most often.

Studies show that, up to about 6 months of age, babies can recognize all the sounds that make up all the languages in the world. Starting at around 6 months old a baby’s brain focuses on(集中于) the most common sounds it hears. Then, children begin responding only to the sounds of the language they hear the most.

In a similar way older babies start recognizing the patterns that make up the

rules of their native language. For example, English children who are about 18 months old start to figure out that words ending in “-ing” or “-ed” are usually verbs, and that verbs are action words.

42. Which of the following opinions does the author agree with? A. Babies are really good language learners. B. Adults should learn languages like babies.

C. It’s better to learn a new language at an early age. D. Babies should be trained to improve language skills.

43. The new research in the second paragraph can be helpful in _____. A. finding successful language learners B. teaching kids with learning problems C. designing human-shaped computers D. improving babies’ language ability

44. The researchers found out that babies learn a language mainly by _____. A. repeating the words of other people B. remembering the full sentences they hear C. hearing and closely watching others speak D. figuring out the meaning of different sounds 45.The purpose of the text is to _____. A. discuss B. educate

C. inform D. Entertain

●It allows people to know more about the universe.

Undoubtedly, space exploration has answered the question of whether the earth is round or not and proved the earth does circle around the sun and not the other way around. 47 It gives people a deeper understanding about the universe and provides them with more information about the world they live in.

●It paves the way to advanced technology.

Scientists are always developing new technology for space programs, but the good news is that these new innovations(创新) aren’t just useful for astronauts and space programs. 48 In fact they have already led to the development of modern products and devices that many people use such as the GPS systems, and breast cancer test imaging, to name a few.

● 49

Space exploration doesn’t just involve scientists and astronauts; it also requires the skills and labor of many engineers, research assistants, technicians, mechanics, and other professionals. If space exploration would be topped today, these people would become jobless, and they wouldn’t have the means to support themselves and their families.

●It can offer a solution to many problems.

Aside from collecting information about the outer space, many space exploration programs are used to solve some of the problems with our modern society. Some programs, for example, help scientists learn more about the earth’s atmosphere and know how to better predict weather and natural disasters. 50 This may be the solution to the earth’s growing population.

Space exploration is one of the biggest achievements of humans as a whole, and it has paved the way to eater scientific understanding and technological advancement over the years. I can see no reason why we should stop our exploration.

A. It creates many jobs.
