A Psalm of Life

I

Tell me not, in mournful numbers, Life is but an empty dream! For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem.

II

Life is real—life is earnest— 人生皆真实人生非虚无! And the grave is not its goal: 最终的归宿决不是坟地 Dust thou art, to dust returnest, “你本是尘土必归尘土,” Was not spoken of the soul.

III

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way; 既不是享乐也不是受苦; But to act, that each to-morrow Find us farther than to-day.

IV

Art is long, and time is fleeting, And our hearts, though stout and brave, Still, like muffled drums, are beating

Funeral ['fju?n(?)r(?)l]marches to the grave. V

In the world’s broad field of battle, In the bivouac ['b?vw?k]of Life, 在人生征途的露宿营地, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife!

VI

Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act—act in the glorious Present! Heart within, and God o’er head! VII

Lives of great men all remind us 伟人的生平向我们昭示; We can make our lives sublime And, departing, leave behind us 而我们一朝告别,都是 Footsteps on the sands of time.

Footsteps, that, perhaps another, 脚印!

A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, 当沉船遇难而惨遭不幸, Seeing, shall take heart again. IX

1

Let us then be up and doing, With a heart for any fate; 敞开胸怀迎接任何命运; Still achieving, still pursuing, 不断地获得不断地追求, Learn to labor and to wait.

Let us smile

The thing that goes the farthest toward making life worthwhile, That costs the least and does the most, is just a pleasant smile. The smile that bubbles from the heart that loves its fellow men, Will drive away the clouds of gloom and coax the Sun again. It's full of worth and goodness, too, with manly/’m ?nli/ kindness

blent /blent/;

It’s worth a million dollars, and it doesn’t cost a cent. There is no room for sadness when we see a cheery/ t? i?ri/ smile;

It always has the same good look; it’s never out of style; It nerves us on to try again when failure makes us blue; The dimples/’dimplz/ of encouragement are good for me and you.

It pays the highest interest — for it is merely lent; It’s worth a million dollars, and it doesn’t cost a cent. A smile comes very easy — you can wrinkle up with cheer, A hundred times before you can squeeze out a salty tear; It ripples/’ripl/ out, moreover, to the heartstrings/’h a:tstri ?s/ that will

tug/t ?g/,

And always leaves an echo/’ek ?u/ that is very like a hug. So, smile away! Folks understand what by a smile is meant; It’s worth a million dollars, and it doesn’t cost a cent.

How poor we are

One day a father and his rich family took his son on a trip to the

country with the firm purpose to show him how poor people can be.They spent a day and a night on the farm of a very poor family.When they got back from their trip,the father asked his son,“How was the trip ?”

“very good,Dad!”

“Did you see how poor people can be ?”the father asked. “Yeah!”

“And what did you learn?”

The son answered,“I saw that we have o dog at home,and they have

four.We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden while they have a river that has no end.We have imported lamps in the garden while they have the stars.Our patio reaches to the front yard,but they have the whole horizon.”When the little boy finished,his father was speechless.

His son added,“Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are!” Too many times we forget what we have and concentrate on what we

don’t have. What is one person’s worthless object is another’s prize possession.Isn’t it true that it all depends on the way you look at things?If you have love,friends,family.health.good humor and a positive attitude towards life ----you’ve got everything!

Saying Good-bye to Cambridge Again

Very quietly I take my leave As quietly as I came here; Quietly I wave good-bye

To the rosy clouds in the western sky. The golden willows/’wil?uz/ by the riverside

Are young brides in the setting sun

Their reflections on the shimmering/’ ?im?ri?/ waves

Always linger/’li?g?/ in the depth of my heart. The floating heart growing in the sludge/sl?d?/ Sways/swei/ leisurely/’le??li/ under the water;

In the gentle waves of Cambridge

I would be a water plant!

That pool under the shade of elm/elm/ trees Holds not water but the rainbow from the sky; Shattered/’ ??t?d/ to pieces among the duckweeds/’d?kwi:dz/ Is the sediment/’sedim?nt/ of a rainbow-like dream? To seek a dream? Just to pole/p?ul/ a boat upstream To where the green grass is more verdant/’v?:dnt/; Or to have the boat fully loaded with starlight And sing aloud in the splendour/’splend?/ of starlight.

But I cannot sing aloud

Quietness is my farewell/fe?’wel/ music; Even summer insects keep silence for me Silent is Cambridge tonight! Very quietly I take my leave As quietly as I came here; Gently I flick my sleeves

Not even a wisp/wisp/ of cloud will I bring away
