My father had returned from his business visit to London when I came in, rather late, to supper. I could tell at once that he and my mother had been discussing something. In that half-playful, half-serious way I knew so well, he said, “How would you like to go to Eton?”

“You bet,” I cried quickly catching the joke. Everyone knew it was the most expensive, the most famous of schools. You had to be entered at birth, if not before. Besides, even at 12 or 13, I understood my father. He disliked any form of showing off. He always knew his proper station in life, which was in the middle of the middle class: our house was medium-sized; he had avoided

joining Royal Liverpool Golf Club and went to a smaller one instead; though once he had got a second-hand Rolls-Royce at a remarkably low price, he felt embarrassed driving it, and quickly changed it for an Austin 1100.

This could only be his delightful way of telling me that the whole boarding school idea was to be dropped. Alas! I should also have remembered that he had a liking for being different from everyone else, if it did not conflict with his fear of drawing attention to himself.

It seemed that he had happened to be talking to Graham Brown of the London office, a very nice fellow, and Graham had a friend who had just entered his boy at the school, and while he was in that part of the world he thought he might just as well phone them. I remember my eyes stinging(刺痛) and my hands shaking with the puzzlement of my feelings. There was excitement, at the heart of great sadness.

“Oh, he doesn’t want to go away,” said my mother, “You shouldn’t go on like this.” “It’s up to him,” said my father. “He can make up his own mind.” 21. C. It is very difficult for a child to get admitted by Eton

D. Children don’t have the right to decide whether they will go to Eton

Dog owners now have a little help understanding their furry friends. A new device called Bow-Lingual “translates” dog barks into English, Korea or Japanese.

Bow-Lingual’s Japanese inventors spent much time and money analyzing dog barks. They found that dog noises can be broken down into six different emotions: happiness, sadness, frustration, anger, assertion and desire.

Part of the Bow-Lingual device hangs on the dog’s collar. The other part is a handle-held unit for the owner. When the dogs barks, the unit displays translated phrases.

Some people have scoffed at Bow-Lingual. “Who would pay US$ 120 to read a dog’s mind?” they ask. But those who have purchased Bow-Lingual praise the device. Pet owner Keiko Egawa, of Japan, says it helps her empathize with her dog, Harry. “Before we go to the park, he always says he wants to play,” says Egawa, “and after a walk, he always says he is hungry.”

Bow-Lingual is not yet available in Chinese. So you’d better keep studying Studio Classroom, or soon your dog may know more English than you do! 25. This passage is mainly talking about _________ . A. talking dogs B. Bow-Lingual’s inventors

Some people who like to eat very hot chili peppers say that they can help you breathe better if you have a cold. Others believe that chilies give you energy.

Do you want to fire up your meals with homegrown chilies? They need a warm climate. If you plant the seeds outside when the weather is cool, place them under glass, giving them the warmth of the sun and protecting them from the wind. You can also start the seeds in your home or a greenhouse.

If you’re planting inside, fill a 7.5-centimeter pot with soil. The pot should have holes in the bottom for water to run out. Tap the sides of the pot to settle the soil.

Drop several seeds onto the surface of the soil, and cover it with a thin layer of vermiculite (蛭石), which can hold air, water and nutrients. Then cover the pot with a see-through plastic bag and place it in a warm area.

When the chilies start growing, take off the bag. When the plants have grown to about two centimeters, place each one carefully in its own 7.5-centimeter pot.

When roots start showing through the holes in the bottom of the pot, transplant each of them into a 12-centimeter pot. When the plants are twenty centimeters high, tie them to a stick placed in the pot to support them.

At thirty centimeters, pinch off the tops of the chili peppers with your fingers to make new branches grow. When the first flowers show, give the plants some potash fertilizer, and if the weather is warm, put them into five-liter pots and place them outside. Make sure they get lots of light and water.

29. When the plants grow to two centimeters, you should ______. A. take the plastic bag off the plant B. place each of them into separate pots C. tie them to sticks to support them

D. transplant them into a 12-centimeter pot

30. The underlined expression “pinch off” in the last paragraph probably means “______”. A. hold up B. break up C. leave out D. take down 31. Based on this passage, how many times should you move a chili plant?

4

A. Once. B. Twice. C. Three times. D. Four times. 32. From the passage we can learn that ______. A. people who like eating chilies are energetic

B. the plants should be fertilized when they blossom C. the pot has holes in the bottom to let the air in D. it’s quite easy to grow your own chilies

At the age of 14, Hugh Evans spent a night with cockroaches(蟑螂)crawling all over him. That experience turned out to be life-changing for Evans, now 30. Far removed from his comfortable home in Australia, he traveled to the Philippines with an aid organization that set him up with a host family. Their home was in Smokey Mountain, a teeming slum(贫民窟) in Manila.

A boy in the family, Sonny Boy, was the same age as Evans. The difference between their lives shocked him hard. “I believed that I wanted to commit my life to this,” said Evans. “I want to see an end to extreme poverty in my lifetime.”

It’s the same goal shared by global organizations and world leaders, and some great progress has been made in reducing the number of the world’s poorest. In 1981, about half the developing world lived in extreme poverty. By 2010, it had fallen to about 20 percent. The organization has set 2030 as the goal to reduce the rate even further, to 3 percent.

The gains worldwide are unbalanced. China and Southeast Asia have made huge progress in lifting their populations above that line. But the opposite is true in some areas in Africa. Even though economic growth is developing across the continent, the number of extremely poor people actually increased over the last three decades.

The organization’s campaign, “Live Below the Line”, hoped for an even greater effect by actually having people eat the way that the world’s poorest have to do every day.

This year about 15,000 people worldwide joined in the campaign such as Ben Affleck and Josh Groban, as well as other notables, such as Jill Biden and Hunter Biden, the vice president’s son. The campaign will raise up to $4,000,000 for various aid organizations working to help the world’s poorest.

37. The author mentioned Evans’ experience in his teens to _________. A. help him change his poor life B. warn him not to live a poor life

C. show how he missed his teenage time D. show how the poor life influenced him 38. What do we know about Evans?

A. He is 44 years old. B. His home is in Australia. C. He lives in extreme poverty now. D. He often does business in Manila. 39. What do the underlined words “the continent” in paragraph 5 refer to? A. Australia. B. Southeast Asia. C. Africa. D. South America.

6

40. “Live Blow the Line” aims at_________.

A. making people know the reality of living in poverty B. making wealthy people donate all their money C. warning wealthy people not to waste food D. helping poor people save more money

Make the Right Choices

What is life’s greatest gift? 41 Choice is the ability to select one course of action from a set of alternatives to achieve a goal. What is so great about choice? It transforms us from dumb animals into artists. Each of us becomes another Michelangelo. Choice becomes nothing other than the tool we use to sculpt (雕刻) our life. The tool doesn’t come free, however, for the price of choice is responsibility. 42 The reward is happiness.

Life is not still. It is a flow. 43 We constantly need to monitor where we are on our journey. We need to ask questions: Am I moving closer to my goals? If not, what corrective measures can I take? What action will I take now to readjust myself to my goals? Choice is power. Choice is at the heart of life. It is the creative power of life.

44 And your life becomes more convenient or comfortable because of them. For example, you decide which stores to shop at and which gas station to go to. But the decisions that we make to sculpt our lives are far more important than deciding where to shop. The more we appreciate the difference between minor and major decisions, the greater the probability that we will experience happiness and fulfillment.

All chess lovers realize that it isn’t necessary to win to enjoy the game. The pleasure is in the playing. Life is like a chess game. 45 If you live by this rule, you will always enjoy the game of life, regardless of its outcome.

A. It is free will or choice.

B. You have to make choices every day.

C. Make the best moves you can under the circumstances. D. But when we accept and carry it out, we get a great return.

E. Every choice we make leads us closer to or farther from our goals. F. Life is full of hard choices, and the bigger they are, the harder they get.

G. Choose to carry out responsibilities not because you have to, but because you want to.

第五节 书法展示(5分)用手写印刷体抄写

With the popularity of English and the Internet, some people like to use English words in Chinese expressions. For example, the use of the word “hold” to mean “to control or be able to deal with”, and “out” to mean “out of date, not fashionable”.

As we all know, every coin has two sides. The positive side of this phenomenon is that much fun can be felt sometimes when English words are directly put in Chinese expressions. However, this phenomenon also has a negative effect on the proper use of standard Chinese. It shows that the western culture is gradually influencing our life. Personally, I don’t appreciate this fashion because keeping Chinese pure is beyond any fashion.
