Fun with English

8B Unit 6 Reading (1)

Good morning, everyone!

I feel happy to have the chance to communicate with you about the teaching plan of the first reading period of Unit 6 in Book 8B, Fun With English . This set of books includes ‘topic --- function --- structure --- task ’, and they are combined together. By learning, students can develop their abilities of using English freely, including listening, speaking, reading and writing. Today I would like to share my opinions about the teaching objectives, teaching difficulties, teaching methods and teaching procedures with you. I hope you can give me more suggestions after that.

First, I would like to talk about the style of this lesson. There are two modules in every book. Unit 6 is in the second module, the main topic of this module is something about charities. In Unit 4, some Chinese charities are introduced, and Unit 5 introduces some more international charities. This lesson is a reading material in Unit 6; It is an article in a newspaper about a fund-raising event called Oxfam Trailwalker. After learning two units about charities, students have had a general idea of the charities, I think many students will be able to share their ideas about charities with the class, so it is helpful to raise learning interests of students and encourage them to take part in our class activities actively.

Now, I would like to talk about the teaching aims.

In the lesson, it has three aims; they are the knowledge objectives, the ability objectives and the effective objectives. By reading, I hope my students can grasp some useful words and phrases. They can recognize and understand information presented in a newspaper article. They can understand related details and information about Oxfam Trailwalker.

For ability objectives, I hope it can improve the students’ reading skills, skimming and scanning skills and speaking skills, Students also need to develop their abilities of inferring general meaning from pictures, title and context. They also need to identify specific meaning through different tasks and get main idea about the event by reading the newspaper article.

Then I will share my effective aims with you, I hope this lesson will arouse the

students’ special attention to charity events, and inspire their sympathy and the sense of responsibility to the society. I also hope to make my students build their confidence in English learning, students will know how to get information they need from a newspaper article.

Now I will talk about the teaching difficulties. I think the most difficult in this period is how to improve students’ abilities of getting main idea and specific information about the event by reading. And it is also important to make students use the language to introduce this event and encourage more people to take part in it.

Then, I will introduce my teaching methods

In this part, I will mainly use Task-based Teaching Method to develop students’ basic abilities of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and improve their good sense of the English language. So in this lesson I’ll give the students some tasks and arrange several kinds of activities: watching pictures, writing, listening, making conversation, acting, group work and so on, in this way, I’ll help the students to get a better understanding of the target language and master the vocabulary and grammar better.

Finally, I would like to talk about my teaching procedures. Step 1 Pre-reading 1, warming up

I will show some pictures and flashcards with the help of Multi-media projector, and ask some questions:

What Chinese and international charities can you see in the pictures? What do they do?

Who do they help? (Show some pictures about those persons in need.) What event do you know about these charities?

Purpose: I will help students revise their knowledge about charities with the help of some pictures. And In this way, I can arouse the students’ interest and take them into a heavy atmosphere of speaking English.. 2, Presentation

(Today, we will read an article about a fund-raising event.)

Show some pictures and tell students to look at them and listen to the teacher’s explanation carefully.

Teacher’s explanation: Oxfam Trailwalker is one of Hong Kong’s biggest fund-raising events since 1981. It is organized by Oxfam Hong Kong to raise money for helping poor people in Hong Kong and other parts of Asia and Africa. It is a tough hike. People can join it in a group of four; team members must support and help each other before and during the event, so it is an excellent chance to learn team spirit. Each team must raise at least HK$6,500. the money is used to help poor people and to support development projects.

Show pictures and important words and expressions to help students learn new words .( fund-raising, tough, hike, excellent, chance, team spirit, etc)

The purpose of this part is to train students’ listening skill by listening to the teacher’s explanation, and get them to grasp some words to reduce the difficulty points of reading.

Task 1, Finishing off Part B

Turn to Page96. Match the words with their meanings . Give them some time to prepare, then check the answers with the partner’s. (Team works)

The purpose is to check if all the students have preview the text, and have understood the meaning of some important words and phrases. Step 2 While –reading Task 2, Listening

Listen to the tape and answer some questions:

1) Who can join the walk?

2) How far will the walker have to finish walking ?

The purpose is to cultivate students’ ability of listening and speaking . Task 3, Skimming

Students read the title and the article quickly and solve the following questions:

Purpose: This part is the teaching and learning difficulty, after learning, students need to grasp some good methods of reading and comprehension. They need to find the detailed information by reading and develop their reading skills as well as their abilities to think creatively .So I design three tasks in different levels for students to finish. In addition, students can feel happy and get the sense of success while they complete these tasks. And this helps to build their confidence in learning and using English.
