Tracking Shots: This Week in Film

The Incomparable Rose Hartman

Quad Cinema Saturday to Sunday

It is a gorgeously shot, sharply edited portrait of photographer Hartman, who in the 1970s and 1980s haunted Studio 54. Hartman made a career of capturing fashion designers, models, musicians, and movie stars in half-guarded moments, somewhere between unaware and aping for the lens. Churchill

Angelika Film Center Monday to Tuesday

Twentieth century?s most awesome leader, a man whose history includes two world wars! But what happens when the story being told feels emotionally false and factually bogus? Churchill, a new drama starring the great Brian Cox, is so full of movie cliches that it?s sometimes hard not to giggle—and oneshould never laugh at the prime minister. Handsome Devil

Cinema Village Thursday to Friday

The Ireland of the teen film Handsome Devil is a place where young boys are encouraged to do only one thing: play rugby. If rugby isn?t your thing, or if you dig things that aren?t rugby-related, you?re immediately dismissed as gay. That?s unfortunately the case for the main character—ginger-haired Ned. Indeed, it?s more like a coming of age film than a comedy. Past Life

Landmark Sunshine Wednesday

Although Past Life is based on real events, Avi Nesher?s latest film plays unapologetically like melodrama(情节剧)—a bit too much at times. Its insistence that guilt-ridden Baruch Milch can recite to his daughters, more than thirty years later, every single word he wrote in a notebook while hiding from the Nazis in Poland during World War II strains credulity.

1. Which film may interest people who like taking pictures? A. Churchill B. Past Life C. Handsome Devil

D. The Incomparable Rose Hartman

2. Where can the audience go to enjoy a comedy this week? A. Quad Cinema B. Angelika Film Center C. Cinema Village D. Landmark Sunshine

3. What do we know about the film Past life? A. It is fictional.

B. It was shown on weekend. C. Avi Nesher was the main character. D. It was concerned with the life of Jewish. D 2. C 3. D

B

When she won the first ever season of American Idol 11 years ago, critics believed she had little chance of

staying on top. Too “girl next door”, they said. Not stylish enough. Not thin enough, either.

But Kelly Clarkson, 31, has proven them all wrong with her string of worldwide hits, from Because of You to the recent Catch My Breath.

Being the first Idol winner in the US was not easy. In the past decade since that victory, Clakson has had to deal with the media?s scrutiny of her weight and personal style. “Everyone?s like, ?You?re a pop star. You should be smaller?.” Clarkson told People Magazine. “But I?m the pop star. I?ll make the rules.”

Since middle school, Clarkson has been aware of the power of her voice. She first joined the school choir (合唱队) at age 13 when a teacher heard her singing in the hallway and demanded that she join. “Singing gave me confidence,” Clarkson told the Orange County Register, a newspaper in California. “Friends at school were nervous because they didn?t know what they wanted to do with the rest of their lives, but I had a peaceful feeling inside, because I knew. ”

Despite her enormous publicity, Clarkson has remained true to her down-to-earth personality. “The reason some winners fade away is that they?re trying to model themselves on somebody else. If we already have the original, why would we need a copy? You need to be offering something new, something that?s uniquely you, ”she told the Daily Mail. Around her rib cage (胸腔) is her new tattoo (纹身), indicating how strong she has become from all that she?s been through. It reads: “What doesn?t kill you.” 4. How did critics think of Kelly? A. Unique. B. Plain.

C. Beautiful-looking. D. Extraordinary.

5. How did Kelley prove critics wrong? A. By losing weight. B. By winning some medals.

C. By giving some worldwide concerts. D. By publishing some very famous songs.

6. What does the under lined word in paragraph 3 mean? A. Tough inspection. B. Extreme curiosity. C. Complete exposure. D. Accurate calculation

7. How did Kelly differ from her friends at school? A. Being very confident. B. Having a definite life goal. C. Having tattoo around her cage. D. Having down-to-earth personality. B 5. D 6. A 7. B

根据文章第一段critics believed she had little chance of staying on top. Too “girl next door”, they said. Not stylish enough. Not thin enough, either.

But Kelly Clarkson, 31, has proven them all wrong with her string of worldwide hits, from Because of You to the recent Catch My Breath. Being the first Idol winner in the US was not easy. Clakson has had to deal with the media?s scrutiny of her weight and personal style.

Friends at school were nervous because they didn?t know what they wanted to do with the rest of their lives, but I had a peaceful feeling inside, because I knew.

The moon is providing a rare triple treat this week. On Wednesday, much of the world will get to see not only a blue moon and a “supermoon”, but also a total lunar eclipse(月蚀). Having all three events taking place at the same time is extremely unusual.

A total lunar eclipse happens when the Earth comes between the Sun and a full moon. The Earth blocks the sun?s light, making the moon appear dark in the sky. A blue moon is a second full moon in one month. It is rare enough that English speakers use the expression “once in a blue moon”to describe it! A supermoon is a full or new moon. It appears brighter and bigger than usual because the moon is closer to the earth than usual.

In a total lunar eclipse, the Earth covers the moon?s surface with its shadow, giving it a red-like color. For that reason, it is also known as a “blood moon. ”Some people are calling this week?s lunar event a “super blue blood moon.” Noah Petro is a scientist with the American space agency NASA. He is calling the lunar event, “the Super Bowl of moons.” No matter what the name, it is likely to impress if the skies are clear.

Just as last August?s total solar eclipse cooled the Earth?s surface, a lunar eclipse cools the surface of the moon.

It?s this sudden cooling- from the heat of direct sunlight to almost a deep freeze—that researchers will be studying. 8. Which of the following picture shows a total lunar eclipse?

A. B.

C. D.

9. What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 2 usually refer to? A. Something that is rarely noticed. B. Something that is round and bright. C. Something that does not happen often. D. Something that can arouse people?s curiosity. 10. What will the lunar eclipse do to the moon? A. Make it absorb less heat. B. Make it give off less heat. C. Make its inner part cooler. D. Make its surface heat go down. 11. What?s the main idea of the passage? A. It explains how the lunar eclipse happens.

B. It tells us NASA?s achievements in observing the moon. C. It offers us some information about a rare total lunar eclipse. D. It is about the effects that the lunar eclipse will have on the moon. A 9. C 10. D 11.

It is rare enough that English speakers use the expression “once in a blue
