There were many great artists during the Renaissance (文艺复兴). Perhaps the most famous are Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Other artists, however, also had great influence both during Renaissance times and later.

Giotto di Bondone (1267- 1337)

Giotto is the first painter to be regarded as a Renaissance artist. He was hired to paint a Fresco in a family chapel (教堂) in Padua, Italy, known as the Arena Chapel. Fresco is a painting made on a wall while the plaster (灰泥) is still wet. Many consider Giotto to be the father of the modern period of art.

Jan van Eyck (1390-1441)

Jan van Eyck’s early influences came from his brother Hubert. In fact, Jan would sometimes finish his brother’s works. The Ghent Altarpiece is an example of Jan finishing what Hubert started. Jan van Eyck perfected the techniques of oil paint ing. He is often known as “the father of oil painting” because of all the new techniques and advances he made in oil painting.

Masaccio (1401-1428)

Masaccio was a famous painter of the Italian Renaissance. He lived a very short life and only a few of his paintings exist, but they were so different from the style of other artists around him that they helped other painters to see things in a new way. Masaccio is often called “the father of Renaissance painting”. He introduced the painting of the lifelike figu res (人物) that had not been done before in the Middle Ages.

Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520)

Raphael’s paintings were known for their perfection. He was first taught art by his father. He also learned early techniques from Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. Raph eal’s influence on art has been great. He changed the way people looked at art, since he painted real life and emotions. He was one of the most detailed portraitists (肖像画家) ever, and is considered as the genius of the High Renaissance.

D. Giotto di Bondone.

22. Why was Masaccio important to the Renaissance art in the Middle Ages?

D. He finished The Ghent Altarpiece started by Hubert.

23. What do we know about Raphael Sanzio from the text?

Honesty comes in many forms. First there is self-honesty. Is what people see real or do you appear through smoke and mirrors? I find that if I try to be something I’m not, I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA (personal bank account). I love how singer Judy Garland put it, “Always be a first-class version (版本) of yourself, instead of a second-class version of somebody else.”

Then there is honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and with your boss? If you have ever been dishonest, just remember that you can’t do wrong and feel right. This story by Jeff is a good example of that:

In my second year of study, there were three kids in my math class who didn’t do well. I was really good at it. I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped them pass. I’d write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off.

At first I felt like I was making money, k ind of a nice job. I wasn’t thinking about how it could hurt all of us. After a while I realized I shouldn’t do that anymore, because I wasn’t really helping them. They weren’t learning anything, and it would only get harder down the road. Cheating certainly wasn’t helping me.

It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. Remember, however, every act of honesty is a deposit (储蓄) into your PBA and will do you good.

24. The underlined part “appear through smoke and mirrors” means “________”.

A. to be clear

B. to be unreal

C. to be honest

D. to be imaginative

25. Which of the following can best explain Judy Garland’s words?

A. Be your true self rather than just follow others.

B. Don’t copy others or you can’t be the first class.

C. Make efforts to be the first instead of the second.

D. Don’t learn from others unless they’re excellent.

26. What does the author expect to show by Jeff’s story?

A. Honesty can be of great help to all of us.

B. A bad thing can be turned into a good one.

C. Helping others cheat can do good to nobody.

D. One should realize the wrong in his bad deeds.

27. In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express ________.

A. one must be brave to be honest all the time

B. it’s difficult to be honest when others are not

C. one should be honest when making a deposit

D. honesty in one’s actions can help him in the future

C

When I was 12, all I wanted was a signet (图章) ring. They were the “in” th ing and it seemed that every girl except me had one. On my 13th birthday, my Mum gave me a signet ring with my initials (姓名首字母) carved into it. I was in heaven.

What made it even more special was that it was the only thing that wasn’t being “replaced”. We’d been burnt out in fires that swept through our area earlier that year and had lost everything — so most of the “new” stuff (物品) we got was just to take the place of what we had lost. But not my ring.

Then, only one month later, I lost it. I took it off before bed and it was missing in the morning. I was sad and searched everywhere for it. But it seemed to have disappeared. Eventually, I gave up and stopped looking for it. And two years later, we sold the house and moved away.

Years went by, and a couple o f moves later, I was visiting my parents’ when Mum told me that she had something for me. It wasn’t my birthday, nor was it Easter or Christmas. Mum noticed my questioning look. “You’ll recognize this one,” she said, smiling. Then she handed me a small rin g box. I took it from her and opened it to find my beautiful signet ring inside.

The family who had bought our house 13 years earlier had recently decided to do some redecorations, which included replacing the carpets. When they pulled the carpet up in my old bedroom, they found the ring. As it had my initials carved into it, they realized who owned the ring. They’d had it professionally cleaned up by a jeweler before sending it to my mother.

And it still fits me.

28. The underlined word “in” probably means “________”.

A. popular

B. affordable

C. private

D. available

29. When she got the ring back, the writer was about ________.

A. 13 years old

B. 15 years old

C. 26 years old

D. 28 years old

30. What can we infer according to the passage?

A. The writer’s family might have moved several times.

B. The writer never stopped looking for the ring she loved.

C. The writer’s ring was cleaned up by the new house owner.

D. The writer lost her ring when she took it off in the morning.

31. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. My New Ring

B. Lost and Found

C. A Kind Couple

D. An Expensive Ring

When we think of leadership, we often think of power. But leadership today is not about forcing others to do things. If this is even possible, it is short-term, and tends to backfire. If you order someone to do something against their will, they may do it because they feel it a must, but the anger they feel will do more harm to them in the long term. They will also experience fear.

Fear causes the thinking brain to shut down, making the person unable to function at his or her best. If they connect you with this emotion of fear, they will become less productive around you, and you will have ended up in not only shooting yourself in the foot, but possibly making every good employee (雇员) or partner unable to work effectively. Fear has no place in leadership.

The way we influence people in a lasting way is by our own character, and our understanding and use of emotion. We can order someone to do something, which may be part of the workday; or we can employ him or her at the emotional level, so they put their heart fully into the projects and provide some of their own creation. Today’s work place is all about relationships.

People work harder in a positive environment w here they’re recognized and valued as a human being as well as a worker. Everyone produces just a bit more for someone they like. Leaders understand the way things work. They know the payment is not the only most inspiring factor in the work life of most people.

The true power of leadership is an inner power that comes from the confidence of emotional

intelligence — knowing your own emotions, and what to do with them, and those of others. Developing your emotional intelligence is the best thing you can do if you want to develop your relationships with people around you, which is the key to the leadership skills.

32. An employee may have a feeling of fear in the work place when ________.

A. he is forced to do things

B. he cannot work at his best

C. He feels his brain shut down

D. he thinks of his work as heavy

33. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A. all employees connect leadership with great fear

B. working conditions don’t influence people’s health

C. a good relationship is the key to business success

D. smart people are more productive in the work place

34. To positively influence employees, a leader should first ________.

A. hide his own emotion of fear

B. provide more better advice

C. develop his own personality

D. give his employees a pay rise

35. Good leadership is mainly seen in a leader’s ability to ________.

A. provide kinds of projects for employees

B. deal with employees’ emotions wisely

C. help improve employees’ living standards

D. give employees special instructions

Making Peace with Y our Parents

As a teen, you’re going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are becoming wider. 36

Here is the challenge: Kids need to experience the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers in that world, which can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses.

Sometimes disagreements can’t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful relationships, you can work towards making home a happy place. For example, try to find a time to talk when you’re all relaxed. If the conversation begins to turn into an argument, you’d better coolly ask to stop it for now. 37 Listen to what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows you’re listening to them.38

Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about each others’ feelings can disagree without getting things ugly.

39 How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you’re going to do. Some teens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget that parents are more than rule-makers. They’re interesting people who like to watch movies and go shopping — just like their teenagers!

What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be rocky? 40 You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend you an ear.

A. You may consider looking for outside help.

B. And then you’ll be able to accept what your parents sa y.

C. You can pick it up again when everyone is more relaxed.

D. Faced with the challenge, children don’t know what to do.

E. Also, your hope to take control of your own life is growing.

F. And you are more likely to get on with your parents if they believe in you.

G. It also gives them a chance to clear things up if you’re not on the same page.
