三.阅读理解(40分)

(A)

My friend feels that every kid before a certain age (not sure what that

age really is) can’t make his own decisions, but I don’t agree. I feel that young children have the ability to choose, and parents need to provide them with the tools to make that choice. With these tools, children can make decisions to benefit themselves and make themselves happy. I have always

新人教版新目标

encouraged my children to make their own decisions, however, sometimes things change—usually when they go to school. When they are in school, do they have choices about things, such as what to learn and how to learn them? It is as if the children are not allowed to make their own decisions suddenly. Decisions are made for them! Will they be able to make decisions by themselves when they grow older? Many parents feel that it is easier to teach than to give children space and time to learn on their own. Getting kids to make decisions and learning from the wrong ones take a long time. I guess there is still a lot to learn about being a parent.

46.What does the writer think of children making their own decisions?

A.Parents should push children to get certain goals.

B.Young children have no ability to make decisions by themselves.

C.It’s good to let children make their own decisions.

D.Before a certain age, children shouldn’t be allowed to make their own decisions.

47. According to the writer, what should parents do for their children?

A.Make decisions for them. B.Teach them how to make the right decisions.

C.Let them make any decisions. D.Help them change their decisions.

48.We know that the writer’s friend ______. A.has a same idea as the writer

B.always encourages children to make their own decisions

C.believes that children will know how to make a decision when they grow older

D.hopes that some changes should take place at school

49. The underlined word “benefit” probably means “______” in Chinese.

A. 使高兴 B. 使受益 C.使忍让 D.使动摇

50.What can we infer from this passage?

A. Many children are not given enough space and time to learn on their own.

B. The writer’s children always like to make decisions by themselves.

C. The writer’s children can choose what to learn at school.

D. It’s easier for parents to teach their children to make decisions.

Not many years ago, some farmers were worried because hawks were taking

many of their chicken. The farmers didn’t know what to do. Finally they went to the country officials and asked for help. “Kill the hawks,” the officials said, “We will even pay for them,” so the farmers began to think of ways to kill the hawks. The farmers killed many hawks. They no longer had to worry about their chickens. But they now had a new worry. Field mice

新人教版新目标

were eating up a lot of the farmers’ grain. How did this happen? Hawks eat not only chickens but also field mice. They eat more field mice than chickens. But the farmers didn’t know this. When they killed a lot of hawks, they changed the balance. When people move into a new place, they often destroy many wild plants. Often these plants are food for the animals. If the animals can’t find enough plants to eat, they will starve or have to leave the place. In one part of the USA, for example the deer there like to eat a certain kind of wild roses. The mountain lions there eat the deer. The number of deer, mountain lions and wild roses doesn’t change much if people leave things as they are. But people killed many mountain lions in order to protect the deer. Soon there were so many deer that they ate up all the wild roses. Then the deer began to eat the green leaves of young trees. These trees were important to the farmers. So the farmers thought of ways to protect their trees. Now the deer had nothing to eat, and many of them died. This was another lesson from nature. To keep the balance of nature is important for us to remember. 根据以上短文内容判断正误,正确的用“T”表示,错误的用“F”表示。

51. Finally the officials told the farmers to kill the hawks.

52. Field mice eat not only chickens but also the farmers’ grain.

53. When the animals can’t find enough plants to eat in a place, they will starve or have to leave.

54. The number of animals changes much if people leave things as they are.

55. It is important for us to keep the balance of nature.

Being shy keeps many Chinese people from getting to know westerners. You may feel nervous about making language mistakes in front of a native English speaker.

But remember, westerners living in Asia know how it feels to try to communicate in a foreign language. They have made many mistakes when speaking Chinese!

So don’t worry about speaking imperfect English. The important thing is just to communicate. Start talking, and make some foreign friends!

Many westerners value(注重) their privacy(隐私). Don’t be surprised if your new friend doesn’t want to include you in everything he does. This may seem strange to Chinese who worry about that their friends will get lonely.

Chinese people often expect their good friends to give advice and take care of them in many ways. If you expect this kind of care from westerners, you may be disappointed. Why? Because most westerners value independence. They feel insulted(侮辱的) if others think they can’t take care of

新人教版新目标

themselves. They will assume(假设) you feel the same way.

Of course, these tips(小提示) are just rules of thumb(经验之谈) and may not apply(适用) to all westerners. Each person you meet will have his or her own ideas about friendship. When you get confused(不明白), don’t be shy and worry to ask questions. Your new western friends may also have many questions about Chinese culture, and they may be hesitant(犹豫) to ask. So encourage them to ask questions, too.

Be honest and open to your friends. Respect each other’s differences. The friendships you make can be lifelong treasure both for you and your new friends.

English words don’t stay the same. People need new words for new ideas and new inventions. Different words come into use, or old words are used in a new way.

English can be changed by borrowing words from other languages. The word “tomato” was borrowed from Mexico and“tea”came from China and so on. Now new space and science words are being borrowed from other countries, too. New words are formed by adding two words together. “Countryside” and “earthquake” are made up of two parts. Sometimes new words are shorter forms of old words. The word “photo” was made from “photograph” by cutting off the end of the longer word. “Plane” was made by cutting off the front part of “airplane”. The names of people and products can become new words, too. Our “sandwich” was named after a man called Sandwich and “sello tape”(透明胶带) was a name given by the company that first made
