Good afternoon everyone, my name is …. I am honored stand here to make a speech! My topic is “what do you think is more important for a child, a happy childhood or top marks at school.

First, my opinion is that a happy childhood is more important than any other for a child. It is the precondition [,pri:k?n'di??n/ of one’s happy life , and it is part and parcel of the growth of good character to a child. Generally speaking, if a child has a happy childhood, he is more likely to become more optimistic and develop himself better than the child who has not. but some parents don’t think so; they attach importance to higher marks.

Actually we can think about it seriously, these two standpoints are not contradictory. Top marks can be one of the factors to making a happy childhood for a child .Because top marks’ students have

privilege['privilid?]in some aspects, such as attending extra classes, getting more attention from teachers, getting more praise than low marks’ students ,and so on. Therefore, top marks can help children to make a happy childhood, but it’s not absolute.

So I do agree that those children who fail to get top marks at school still have the right to enjoy a happy childhood. A top mark isn’t the only standard to measure a child’s ability. Teachers can not take this standard, Parents either. Although with common marks, some children also can do a good job in other things, such as he may have the good interpersonal

relationship with people, own the intimate affection with family or be good at sports, and so on.

Second, I want to say is that parents have to shoulder the responsibility to provide the children with a happy childhood. There is saying: Parents are best teachers for their children. With the good conditions from our society, parents should take their children to the Children art center or the places closing nature, guide them encourage them actively to find out their own talents or interests, give them more care and chances to develop themselves.

For example, As parents, you can not prevent your child from catching fishes in the river with peers, maybe he can be a excellent hockey player years later; and you can not disagree with your child to join the Campus singing competition in stead of urging he studies hard, maybe he can be a wonderful singer in the future. Doing the things children like, they will bloom the sweet smile, owning a true happy childhood. Last but not least, children should learn to be grateful to every person who has ever helped him, should learn to make contribution to the society. I also believe those are all the parents’ wishes. So a happy childhood is necessary for a child.

That’s all, thank you.
