Analysis of the teaching material 1) This is the seventh unit of Book 2 used for Grade Seven students in middle school. 2) The main topic of this unit is “weather”. 3) In this unit, students will learn to describe different weather. Such a topic is related to their daily life. And it’s very interesting and useful to students. So it’s helpful to raise their learning interests and improve their spoken English. Ⅱ. Analysis of the students 1) Easy to arouse their learning emotion. 2) Poor in cooperative learning skills. 3) Thinking ability of the image is strong, but the attention can be scattered easily. Ⅲ. Analysis of the teaching goals 1. Knowledge goals: 1) Key vocabulary: raining, windy, cloudy, sunny, snowing, weather, Moscow, Boston, Toronto 2) Target language: What is the weather like in + 地点 ? How is the weather in + 地点 ? It’s raining/sunny/windy/cloudy/snowing. 2. Ability goals: Enable the students to talk about the weather. 3. Moral goals: Learn to care about others. Protect our environment, because we only have one earth. Ⅳ. Analysis of the important and difficult points Important sentence patterns: What is the weather like in + 地点? How is the weather in + 地点? It’s raining/sunny/windy/cloudy/snowing. Anticipated difficulties: How to talk about the weather. Ⅴ. Analysis of the teaching methods Centered on “task-based language teaching”, I’ll give students some tasks and arrange many kinds of activities: make conversations, group activities, listening practice . As we all know, the main instructional aims of learning English in the Middle School is to cultivate students’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading, writing and their good sense of the English language. So in this lesson I’ll mainly use “Communicative” teaching method, “Audio-visual” teaching method besides “Task-based” teaching method. Step 1 Warm up and lead in (4’) Teacher activity 1. Greetings 2. Show a picture of fishing and a sun in the sky. By asking What are they doing? which is related to last unit, so this is easy for the students to answer. Then the teacher point to the sun and ask What’s this? Of course it’s a sun. After that teacher show the key word sunny. 4. Use the structure” what’s weather like in ...? or how’s the weather in ...?” Step 2 Presentation (15’) 1. Read the new words after the teacher. 2. Repeat the dialogues. 3. Finish the exercise 1a. Purpose 1. Be familiar with new words. 2. Study the new structure “What’s the weather like in+ 地点?= How’s the weather in+ 地点? It’s cloudy/windy/sunny/raining /snowing. Step 3 Pair work 1c (10’) Teacher activity Ask the students to tell how the weather is in each picture Student activity Practice in pairs like: A: What’s the weather like in Picture b? B: It’s sunny. A: How’s the weather in Picture c? B: It’s snowing. Purpose This activity will help students consolidate the knowledge and learn how to cooperate and communicate with others. Step 4 Listening (5’) Pre-listening We can’t neglect listening part as it is a very important skill. Then let students predicate before listening. It is a good way to stimulate students’ curiosity and the enthusiasm of participation. And it’s also an efficient way to improve their listening ability. While-listening 1. Listen to 1b. Listen and write these city names in the boxes above. 2. Try to imitate the pronunciation and intonation. Imitation is a good way to learn English well, especially for junior students. Post-listening Write these correct city names. This task aims to help students learn to describe different weather in different places. Step 5 Let’s chant! (6’) Read the chant together and make chant one by one. Students need to change places and weather. 1. This activity can active the atmosphere of class and train their communicative competence. 2. Students will know well the structure and the descriptions of weather in this lesson. Step 6 Summary (4’) Teacher activity Summarize the usage of the descriptions of weather and know how to ask others about different weather. Student activity Listen and remember. Purpose Summary can help students have deep impressions on what they’ve learned in this class. Step 7 Homework (1’) 1.Listen to the weather report, and make a list. 2.Make a phone call to your friend ask about the weather there. Homework is so important that the students should speak English as much as they can in class or after class. It is necessary for the students to do some extensive exercises after class to consolidate the knowledge they learned. Ⅸ. Analysis of teaching effects and teaching reflection The teaching aims of this lesson had been finished. I think it will be successful to use the three teaching methods to help the students learn the knowledge well. And the exercise helps the students improve the grammar. But because of the large number of the students, there still some students don’t understand this lesson well. Students should do more exercise next lesson.
