It’s said the king of Thebes once received the warn from oracle:if he let the newborn grow up,then his throne and life would be threatened.so he ordered one hunter to take the baby away and kill him.but the hunter took a pity for the baby,he didn’t kill him,instead,he abandoned him.the baby was found by a farmer.many years later,when Laius made a pilgrim,he met a young man and he was killed because of a quarrel with that person.and this young man was Oedipus.Oedipus broke the myth of Sphinx and was elected as the king of Thebes.he married the queen-Iocasta.then there were many calamities.the people of Thebes suffered pest and famine.they asked the oracle for the reason.the oracle told them’Oedipus had killed his father and married his mother’.As Oedipus knew it,he blinded his eyes,left Thebes and led a vagrant life.

We have to say that Oedipus’s life was miserable.he could do nothing about his life.his life was enveloped with tragic. But David Herbert Lawrence’s <sons and lovers> was different from it. the inevitable fascination with his son on the mother，and the abnormal cravings of the mother for her son,all these went against moral principles and it spread in the cruel reality to entangle both lives,even at the expense of more people’s happiness.

strong sense of humanity,but the difference was,he chose another way to seek self- emancipation – sex.he explored the wonders of life based on the relationship between men and women，which reflected the changing times, and ultimately achieved a unity of body and soul of the breathtaking beauty of human nature.when the representative works of "Sons and Lovers" came out,the world became noisy,there were criticism and gossip words from people to people. Of all Lawrence's work, <Sons and Lovers> told us most about the emotional source of his ideas," observed Diana Trilling. "The famous Lawrence theme of the struggle for sexual power--and he is sure that all the struggles of civilized life have their root in this primary contest--is the constantly elaborated statement of the fierce battle which tore Lawrence's family." Sons and Lovers was one of the landmark novels of the twentieth century. When it appeared in 1913, it was immediately recognized as the first great modern restatement of the oedipal drama, and it is now widely considered the major work of D. H. Lawrence's early period. This intensely autobiographical novel recounts the story of Paul Morel, a young artist growing to manhood in a British working-class family rife with conflict. The author's vivid evocation of the all-consuming nature of possessive love and sexual attraction makes this one of his most powerful novels.

"Sons and Lovers" in some point was a true portrayal of Lawrence’s adolescent life. His father was a coal miner, receiving almost no formal education, irascible, alcoholism, and often in trouble after drunk, beat his wife and children. The mother was a primary school teacher, devoted her life to their children's education, hoping that they could escape from the bottom of society. because of her unfortunate marriage, she would have faith in her children, resulting in Lawrence as well as youth from an early age had a special extraordinary feelings of attachment for his mother. but this differed from the plot of the novel.the hero’s attachment to his mother in the novel was abnormal love.Paul had desire for soul with Miriam, but they couldn’t get harmony in body.and he thought that would be tarnished.however,now how many people care about that? I do not know how many people care about their souls.in the world of love like fast food, desire to vent everwhere, is there still person who suffers from the uncombination of physic and soul? As for Clara Dawes, who fulfilled the sexual component of his ascent to manhood but left him, as ever, without a complete relationship to challenge his love for his mother. As Paul voyaged from the working-class mining world to the spheres of commerce and art (he has fair success as a painter), he accepted that his own achievements must be equally to his mother's. was rich with promise. She was to see herself fulfilled... All his work was hers."In fact, the woman he loved should be his mother! What a strange and complex emotion！No one can replace her in his heart! His mother was happy, although her husband didn’t care about her, she had Paul.and he regarded her as a pure girl to care for her without impurities. Even though she didn’t have a smooth and luxury life, and even in poverty, but she is happy!

Mrs.Morel poured her love and passion into her son and got the love which couldn’t get from her husband. For the Mrs. Morel, in her heart, she took her own son as her ideal lover, took care of him and raised him,and everything she had done was beyond a mother could do. She truly took her own son as her true love, not just family love,but a greater manifestation of love.and Paul,also thought his mother as his love,believed no one could replace his mother in his heart.

This love is moving, and it is terrifying.all kinds of perverted sexual confusion of jumbled emotions in both the weak heart struggled. The kind of love was as a curse, not even erased by death.and at last,Mrs Morel died，and Paul faltered in the trance at the lost of spiritual support, walking to the mysterious future. This love, couldn’t to tell, just waiting for the demise of both body and pretended that love didn’t exist,but how should we do when Paul and Mrs. Morel
