It’s a small and brown house with a broken front door. There is no front yard. It looks smaller between the two buildings on either side. There are two stairs in our house, but they are ordinary hallway stairs, and the house has only one washroom. Everybody has to share a bedroom.

Once a classmate passed by and saw me playing out front.

“Where do you live?” She asked.

“There,” I said pointing up to the house.

“You live there?”

“You live there?” The way she said it made me feel nothing.

“There,” I nodded.

I knew then I have to have a house on a hill like the ones with gardens where Papa works. I used to go there. I don’t anymore. I’m tired of staring at them like the hungry.

One day I will on my own house. Not a flat. Not a daddy’s house. A house all my own. Only a house quiet as snow and clean as paper. People who lives on hills sleep so close to the stars that they forget those who live too much on the earth. But I won’t forget who I’m or where I came from. What has scales(鳞片) and curl into a ball? Pangolins!

Pangolins is a name coming from the Malaysian word “pengguling”, which means “rolling over”, as they are able to roll themselves up into a ball when facing danger. The scales, covering most their bodies, are quite protective. If other animal gets caught between the scales, it can get a serious cut.

Pangolins live mainly on ants and some other insects. With small heads and no tooth, pangolins have very long, strong and sticky(黏的) tongues that are perfect for getting ants in the deep holes. As they have poor eyesight, they look for ants with their sense pf smell. With strong legs, they are not only good at digging holes but also can run surprisingly fast and often rise on their back legs to smell the air.

Sleeping in the daytime and looking for food at night, pangolins are called the animals of night. Since they are very secretive, it is difficult for scientists to study them. Though little is known, pangolins are greatly killed for their meat and scales. Most Asian people believe the scales can have medical purposes. But according to recent research, the scales actually are no good medicine, as they are made from the same thing that also forms human hair and fingernails.

E- mail is used for everything, and it makes life easier. But do you know

where e-mail came from? The man who invented it was Ray Tomlinson, a US

engineer. He died at the age of 74 on March 5, 2016.

Back in 1971, Tomlinson was working on something that could send

messages from one computer to another. Tomlinson tried to find a way to separate users' name from the names of their computers . He needed a kind of symbol, However, it couldn't be a popular one, and it couldn't be one that computers might know in a different context. It needed to be on keyboard at the same time.

"The ' @' sign made the most sense," he told Wired in 2012. "It said where the user was….at. " For example, by writing"Alex at 2lst Century Teens" you can send a message to somebody named Alex who works at 21st Century Teens. This was the early from of e-mail

The interesting thing is that Tomlinson didn't remember what the very first test message he sent was.

Tomlinson, the father of e-mail, changed the way the world communicates and more importantly saved the symbol "@ " .

Today, the "@ " symbol is finding new life outside of our inboxes ( 收件箱) . Most famously, social media like Weibo and Wechat use it at the beginning of user names. So even if we don't use e-mail some day, Tomlinson's contribution will certainly live on.

B. The symbol "@ " now is only used outside of the inboxes.

C. Tomlinson 's contributions won't live on if we don't use e-mail

D. Tomlinson still remembered clearly what the first message he sent was.

60. What's the passage mainly about?

A. It's about how to send e-mails on the computer.

B. It’s about how Tomlinson invited the e-mail and the sign "@ " .

C. It's about Tomlinson's contribution to 21st Century Teens.

D. It's about why the sign "@ " is as important as Weibo and Wechat.

Everyone has his or her own personality (性格) ,But a new study says mast people's personalities can fit into four types, They are optimistic (乐观), trusting, pessimistic (悲观), and envious(好胜的)The study was done by a group of Spanish scientists. They divided 541 volunteers into pairs, and put them in different situations, according to Science Daily. The pessimistic (20%) don't think may choices are good enough. They usually choose the one that is least harmful. So they will go for rabbits because that way he or she is more likely to catch something.

Abbreviations(缩写) are now widely used in our daily lives. Here are some of them. Are you familiar with them?

R.S.V.P. stands for a French phrase, “répondez, s'il vous plaît,” which means “please reply.”If R.S.V.P. is written on an invitation, it means the invited guest must tell the host(主人) whether or not they plan to attend the party as soon as possible. Because the hosts who are planning a dinner party or a wedding need to know how many people to count on and how much food and drink to buy. More important, though, it is polite to reply someone who was nice enough to invite you, even if it is to say that you are sorry that you will not be able to attend.

B.Y.O.B. has been used first in the early 1970s to mean “bring your own bottle (of wine)”, although in

present-day it is just as likely to mean “bring your own booze” or “bring your own beer”. It was used by small restaurants that was not allowed to sell wine. But now B.Y.O.B. is often placed on an invitation to tell the guests that the host will not be providing wine and that guests are welcome to bring their own.

R.I.P stands for “rest in peace” in English, The phrase was not found before the 8th century. It became ubiquitous(普遍现象) on the tombs of Christians in the 18th century, Now, i t is always written on tombstones to express the wish of forever rest and peace to someone who has died.

P.K. means “Player Killing” originally. The word P.K. is now also used in China and Taiwan as a verb(动词). In fact, there may actually be no player killing. It is most used in 1v1 situations like 1v1 basketball, 1v1 chess, 1v1 footrace and so on. The game of telephone is a classic ice breaker and party game. It’s easy to set up and a lot of fun to play. You and your friends will try to pick a word or phrase, “pass it on” by whispering(耳语) it to someone next to you, and have fun seeing how much it changed during the game. All you will need to play is a couple of friends, a word or phrase, and a whisper.

Get everyone in place.

Although the game of telephone is simple to play, you will need to arrange(安排) the players in a way that supports the game. Have everyone stand in either a line or a circle. Players should be spaced far enough apart that they won’t overhear the word when it isn’t their turn. Proper position is important when playing telephone.

Start the game.

Choose a person to start the game. Make the person think of a word or give a certain word to him or her. And he or she should whisper it to the person next to them. The pronunciation of the word should sound like many others’ as the idea is to see how much it changes by the game’s end. Once the word has been told to the next person, they will whisper it to the person next to them.

Continue whispering the word.

Players continue listening to the word and repeating what they think they heard to the person next to them. This is done until the last person in the line or circle is told the word. Every person should have heard the word or phrase by the end of the game.

See how much the word changed.

Once the last person hears the word or phrase, they will say what they think they heard out-loud. This is compared to the original word that the game started with. This is the moment when all the players get to learn just how much the word or phrase changed through their “telephone line”.

What are fossils?

Fossils are the remains of plants or animals. For such remains to be considered fossils, scientists have decided they have to be over 10,000 years old.The word fossil comes from

the Latin word “fossilis”, which means, “dig up”.Fossils can be divided into “body fossils” and “trace(痕迹) fossils”. Body fossils are the remains of a plant or animal’s body. Trace fossils are the remains of the activity of an animal, such as footprints, egg shells, and nests.

How are fossils formed?

Some animals were quickly covered after their death by sediment(沉淀物) like earth, mud or sand. Over time, the parts of the animals that didn’t rot (usually the harder parts like bones and teeth) were covered in the newly formed sediment. Then, a lot of chemical changes happened to the animals bodies. Water with minerals(矿物质) went into the bone and took the place of the chemicals in the bone with rock-like minerals. In the end we get a heavy, rock-like copy of the original object - a fossil. There weren’t any changes in size and shape when an object changed into a fossil, but the fossil of a bone doesn’t have any bone in it!It is chemically more like a rock! According to scientists, fossils have been found on every continent(大陆) on Earth.

Pollution inside homes and other buildings kills more than 4 million people each year. Many people die as a result of breathing smoke or from cooking over wood﹣powered of coal﹣powered stoves.

One way to reduce the number of deaths is through cooking equipment powered by the sun.Crosby Menzies,a solar power expert in a South African company, described his latest solar cooker called

the“Sol.4”,”It is four square meters of mirrors, six to eight meters in length. It is quite a large cooler.”

The“Sol.4”works by reflecting (反射)light from the sun off large mirrors. The mirrors direct (把…对准)the light at a cooking pan. Then the light heats the pan with solar energy.Within two minutes, the pan is hot enough to cook sausages and onions. In just four minutes, water can be boiled. That is as fast as cooking with natural gas or electricity.

The cooker is also much“friendlier”than other models because people do not have to stand in the sun to use it.And people can prepare meals without having to collect firewood or spend money on coal.Such individuals would be less likely to have breathing illnesses from harmful smoke.

At present, the cooker only works when the sun is shining. But engineers are working on a way to make it work without sunlight.

Each cooker costs about $2000,which is a large amount of money for most Africans. To solve that problem,Crosby Menzies has crated a non﹣governmental organization called solar Cookers for Africa. It plans to raise money through donations to provide poor people with solar cooking equipment.
