Four days after Dad’s 67th birthday,he had a heart attack. He was lucky—he survived. But something inside him had died. His enthusiasm for life was gone.

My husband and I asked Dad to live with us on our small farm, hoping the fresh air would help him adjust.Within a week after he moved in,I regretted the invitation. He criticized everything I did.I became frustrated.

One day I read an article about a nursing home.Several depressed patients’attitudes had improved dramatically when they were given dogs. So,I drove to the animal shelter that afternoon. As soon as I got there,a pointer’s(指示犬)eyes caught my attention. They watched me calmly.

A staff member said:“He got here two weeks ago and we’ve heard nothing. His time is up tomorrow.”I turned to the man in horror.“You mean you’re going to kill him?”

“Ma’am,”he said gently.“We don’t have room for every unclaimed dog.” The pointer’s calm brown eyes awaited my decision.“I’11 take him,”I said. Glancing at the dog,Dad wrinkled his face and turned back toward the house. Then, suddenly, the pointer pulled free from my grasp. He sat down in front of Dad.Dad’s anger melted, and soon he was hugging the animal.

It was the beginning of a warm friendship.Dad named the pointer Cheyenne.Together they spent long hours walking down dusty lanes and relaxing on the banks of streams.

Dad’s bitterness faded, and he and Cheyenne went on to make many friends. Then, late one night two years later,I felt Cheyenne’s cold nose searching through my bed covers. He had never come into our bedroom before at night.I ran into my father’s room and found that he had passed away.

Two days later,my shock and grief deepened when I discovered Cheyenne lying dead beside Dad’s bed.As I buried him near their favorite stream,I silently thanked the dog for restoring Dad’s peace of mind.

For so long, failure has been pictured as something negative, something to be ashamed of

and something to be kept a secret. But a Swedish psychologist,Samuel West, has decided to put our worst fears on the table. He is opening a museum-the Museum of Failure-in Helsingborg,Sweden, this June.

Instead of showing successes,as museums usually do,the Museum of Failure will display over 60“failed”products from big-name companies such as Nokia,Apple and Coca-Cola.“I really hope you see that these mega-brands that everybody respects, they screw up too,”West told The New York Times.“I hope that makes you feel less nervous about learning something new.”

West’s opinion isn’t a new one.Albert Einstein once said,“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”And this idea has been embraced by lots of companies in the US.Silicon Valley, for example,is the home of some of the world’s most creative companies, yet its slogan turns out to be,quite surprisingly,“Fail fast, fail often.”

However, there are reasons for this.“The best companies are those that encourage failure, embrace out-of-the-box thinking, and allow employees to make mistakes and see what happens,”wrote Simon Casuto of Forbes.

But some people are skeptical of this so-called“culture of failure”.They are worried that if failure becomes“a symbol of honor”,as Wired magazine put it,it may even be seen as“uncool”when someone tries to reduce the risk of failure. This may push people to care too little and try too little.

“Sometimes people hide behind failure, when they could have prevented it,”wrote Anna Isaac of The Telegraph.

So it's important that you set apart the two kinds of failure—the kind that makes you a loser and the kind that takes you forward. The key is whether you’ve learned something from your mistakes.

“Learning is the only process that turns failure into success,”West told The Guardian.“If you don’t learn from your failures, then you’ve really failed.”

28.What does the underlined phrase“screw up”mean in the second paragraph? A.Make a profit. C.Make a highlight.

B.Make a mess. D.Make a risk.

29.What message does the slogan“Fail fast,fail often.”convey? A.The more failure,the better. B.Accept failure,and try new things.

C.The more you fail, the less success you achieve. D.Failure is more important than success.

30.Which magazine shows doubt about the culture of failure? A.The New York Times. B.Forbes. C.Wired.

D.The Guardian.

31.What’s West’s opinion about failure? A.Failure’s value lies in learning from it.

B.If you fail,you are a loser.

C.It’s not necessary to try to reduce the risk of failure. D.Failure is the key to put you forward.

D

Maybe the Man of Steel has such a great body because of all that flying and leaping onto tall buildings with a single bound(弹跳).

At least that’s the promise of a new piece of exercise equipment that combines physical exercise with the virtual reality(虚拟现实)experience of flying through the air like Superman. It will be offered by the Young Men’s Christian Association(YMCA),a nonprofit organization devoted to youth development and healthy living.

The $ 9,000 machine,a German invention called Icaros, will be the first of its kind available for public use in the country when the new YMCA site in Minneapolis opens in early 2018.

How does it work? Users put on virtual reality goggles(防护眼镜)and then lie down on a metal flame that moves forward and back and rolls from side to side depending on how you shift your weight.

In“Flight”mode, you’re traveling over a landscape of mountains, glaciers and narrow valleys.Tilt(倾斜)down on the platform, and you virtually dive nose first toward the ground.Roll to the right, and you’re flying over a bend in a valley. Many other experience modes are available too.

What’s it like? Nathan Maehren, senior vice president of digital for YMCA,has used the machine about 100 times. When he’s going fast on the machine.he makes sounds like a weightlifter as he quickly shifts his body, finding his way around virtual objects without crashing.“I almost don’t realize I'm working out.”he said.“You're having fun.”

He said it was more of a training for his arms and shoulders than he expected. It may seem like a lot of hard work just to get good exercise, but everyone knows how boring gyms can be.

Surprisingly,he didn’t feel sick. That may be because what you see in the goggles reflects what your body is doing on the platform. 32.What is the machine Icaros probably for? A.The young to build up.

B.The disabled to travel in virtual reality. C.The old to keep healthy.

D.Children to experience new technology.

33.What should the users do when using the machine? A.To pass a body test.

B.To stand on the platform. C.To wear special glasses.

D.To know how to fly over mountains.

34.How did Nathan Maehren feel after using the machine?

A.Extremely tired. B.A little bit dizzy.

D.Not excited as he expected.

C.More amused than in gyms. 35.What is the text mainly about?

A.The introduction of YMCA. B.A new machine for exercise. C.The future of Virtual reality.

D.The technology used in films.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

In any college application process, the interview is very important.

A quick look at interview tips will tell you to smile, make eye contact, and shake the interviewer’s hand firmly. 36

So,what should you do?

The interviewer must decide if you’re a good fit for the university. 37

38 Interviewers are constantly surprised by how many really smart and hardworking students do so little research before they go into their interview. You should, for example, find out where your interviewer is from, what he or she studied, and maybe even find publications he or she has written. This can be done easily by searching for a few minutes online.

More importantly, you should do a lot of research on the university beyond simply knowing its ranking in league tables.Interviewers hate when you say you want to go to their university just because it’s famous. 39 After all,you would want this school to choose you over another excellent Chinese student.

Finally, make sure you“do your homework”.If you're interested in biology,be sure to know the biology professors’names. If you’re interested in hiking and camping,be sure to know the name of the outdoors club at the schoo1. 40 A.Remember that preparation is the key. B.They will lead to your success in the interview.

C.That means it’s important to succeed as socially well-adjusted. D.Tie your interests and goals to what the school in particular has to offer. E.First of all, dress appropriately to leave a good impression.

F.Unfortunately, few tell you what it is that the interviewer is really looking for. G.Instead, you should explain why you chose them over other great universities. 第三部分(共两节,满分45分)
