In the eighteenth century young ladies in Italy were taught reading, writing, music and mathematics(数学), but their knowledge of history and geography was very poor.

The purpose (目的) of these bridges is to enable(使……能做……) pedestrians (行人) to cross road safely. Overhead bridges are used in very much the same way as zebra crossings .
