A friend of mine asked me the question, “Who said life was going to be fair, or that it was even meant to be fair?” Her question was a good one. It reminded me of something I was taught as a youngster: Life isn’t fair. It’but it’s absolutely true. One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for others, thinking that life should be fair, or that someday it will be. It’s not and it won’t.

One of the nice things about surrendering (承认) to the fact that life isn’t fair is that it keeps us from feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with what we have. We know it’s not “life’s job” to make everything perfect, it’s our own challenge. Surrendering to this fact also keeps us from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is dealt a different hand; everyone has his own strengths and problems in the process of growing up, facing the reality and making decisions; and everyone has those times that they feel cheated or unfairly treated.

The fact that life isn’t fair doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do everything in our power to improve our own lives or the world as a whole. Instead, it suggests that we should. When we don’t recognize or admit that life isn’t fair, we tend to feel pity for others and for ourselves. Pity is a self-defeating (自我挫败的) emotion that does nothing for anyone, except to make everyone feel worse than they already do. When we do recognize that life isn’t fair, however, we feel compassion (同情) for others and for ourselves. And compassion is a heartfelt emotion that delivers loving-kindness to everyone it touches. The next time you find yourself thinking about the unfair world, try reminding yourself of this very basic fact. You may be surprised that it can push you out of self-pity and into helpful action.

If you're a busy man, then lunch time may be the only time you have to train and keep a healthy body. That is, if you aren't the type to work out early in the morning or after work, like most people. A one-hour lunch break is more than enough time to get to the gym, eat lunch and change, then a one-hour workout becomes a 20-minute

workout. Just follow this simple lunchtime workout plan and you'll be able to have a healthy body and still have time to do the things you enjoy before and after work.

Remember that this workout routine is not made for advanced trainers but for keeping a healthy and good-looking body. Make sure you eat some healthy food at least 60 minutes before your lunch break, and eat your full meal right after your workout. Your Cardiovascular(心血管) and lower body workout time should include a- half- hour daily walk, which can easily be done outdoors. Simply put on your favorite shoes and go for a walk around the houses whatever weather it can be. Another good choice is walking up and down your office building staircase. Stair-climbing will work your leg muscles and increase your heart rate(心率) at the same time. A 30-minute walking five times a week is enough to work your whole lower body and cardiovascular system. To do more good to your health, try to increase your pace(步速) weekly. Set paces and gradually increase your distances. For example, go around the houses six times instead of five in a 30minutes, or climb the staircase 10 times instead of 9. If possible, change your cardiovascular training: use the staircase one day, and walk around the block on other days.

After your 30-minute lower-body exercise, you can begin your upper body workout by doing a few basic exercises. Find a clean space on the floor (big enough to fit your entire body) and carry out the following trained pushup workout to tighten your whole upper body. Check out the pushup routine to keep you fit on your lunch break.

C. Working outside. D. Working very hard.

59. According to the passage how much workout do you need for a basic lunchtime

break?

C. An hour D. Two hours

60. From the passage we can draw a conclusion that______.

A. workout routine takes up too much time

B. lunch-break workout had better be done in a gym

C. your whole body can be worked out well in your office building

D. a busy man can only have a healthy body by working out during lunch break

When eating ice cream or something very cold, many people feel a very real ache behind their eyes and in their forehead. About 30% of people feel this headache and while it only lasts about a minute or so, it can be very painful.

Why don’t some of us feel comfortable when we are just trying to enjoy a delicious ice cream? Don’t get mad at your favourite ice cream, because it is really the top of your mouth that is to blame. Run your tongue along the roof(顶部) of your mouth starting near your teeth. Close to the teeth, you’ll feel a bumpy ridge (脊状隆起). As you move your tongue further back, it gets smooth. This is your palate(腭) where many nerves(神经) and blood vessels (血管) are there.

The reason is that when you eat or drink something very cold, and it touches your

palate, the nerves send a signal to your body telling it that your brain is too cold. Your body receives it and begins to send more blood to the blood vessels in your head. More blood means more warmth. These blood vessels in your head expand quickly to hold the more blood. It is this quick swelling(膨胀物) of the blood vessels in your head that makes your head hurt.

If you experience this headache, it will only last a short time and will go away by itself. But, there are ways to try to prevent these brain pains or fight them once you get them.

1. Try eating your ice cream slowly.

2. Try holding your breath for a moment.

3. Try taking one mouthful of hot water, hot chocolate, or hot milk.

4. Close your eyes and press your fingers.

5. Wait it out. The headache will usually pass on its own within 30~60 seconds. If these don’t work and you feel that headache still on you, you roll your tongue in a ball and press the bottom of your tongue to your palate. This will act as a blanket and warm your palate quickly. The nerves will think the brain is warming up and won’t send blood to the blood vessels.

58. If you feel painful by eating ice cream, you should ____.

A. close your mouth B. have a blanket on you

C. have some hot drink D. get your brain warm

59. We know from the passage that the headache is caused by ____.

A. too many nerves and blood vessels in your palate

B. the cold behind your eyes and in your forehead

C. the roof of your mouth starting near your teeth

D. more blood that is sent to the vessels in your head

60. According to the passage, we can infer that the writer is ____.

A. very helpful and enjoys writing

B. experienced and knows medicine

C. so clever and has much knowledge

D. kind and has had good education

Studies have shown it takes a doctor about 18 seconds to stop a patient after he begins talking.

It was Sunday. I had one last patient to see. I came close to her room in a hurry and stood at the doorway. She was an older woman, sitting at the edge of the bed, trying to put socks on her swollen (肿大的) feet. I spoke quickly to the nurse, saw her chart saying she was in stable (稳定的) condition. I was almost in the clear.

She asked if I could help put on her socks. Instead, I began a long speech that went something like this: “How are you feeling? Your blood sugar and blood pressure were high but they’re better today. The nurse said you can’t wait to see your son who’s visiting you today. It’s nice to have family visit from far away. I’m sure you

really look forward to seeing him.”

She stopped me with a serious voice. “Sit down, doctor. This is my story, not your story.”

I was surprised and ashamed. I sat down. I helped her with the socks. She began to tell me that her only son lived around the corner from her, but she had not seen him in five years. She believed that the pressure of this caused greatly to her health problems. After hearing her story and putting on her socks, I asked if there was anything else I could do for her. She shook her head and smiled. All she wanted me to do was to listen.

Listening to someone’s story costs less than expensive diagnostic (诊断的) testing but is key to healing (痊愈).

I often thought of what that woman taught me — the importance of stopping, sitting down and truly listening. And, not long after, unexpectedly, I became the patient, with a diagnosis of sclerosis (硬化症) at age 31. Now, 20 years later, I sit all the time — in a wheelchair.

For as long as I could, I continued to see patients from my chair, but I had to give up my job when my hands were influenced. I still teach medical students and other health care professionals, but now from the view of doctor and patient.

I tell them I believe in the power of listening. I tell them I know firsthand that huge healing takes place within me when someone stops, sits down and listens to my story.

58. What does “I was almost in the clear” mean?

A. I thought everything was clearly.

C. I almost made myself understood.
