No young man or woman makes the decision to be a soldier lightly. As much as we support our son, we also have some fears.

Sharing the news of his decision turned out to be a little bit terrifying as well. We reached out to our friends. We’d assumed that those around us---- family, friends, and community------ would join us in supporting him and honoring the sacrifice he was willing to make. The great majority of those we told did react this way, gathering around us with encouragement.

But I also heard comments like: “I’m sorry. You must be bitterly disappointed in him,”

A section of the Science News for Kids Website is devoted to particular interests. At present, we have six such zones: a weekly brainteaser(难题) for those who enjoy solving and inventing puzzles (Puzzle Zone), entertaining science-fiction composition exercises for those interested in writing(SciFiZone), and weekly science short description along with science project ideas and tips(ScienceFairZone). The GameZone contains a small selection of logic and memory games. The TeacherZone has materials, including question sheets related to the feature article of the week, so that teachers can bring science news topics to the classroom. The LabZone features a weekly hands-on activity or science project idea. In the future, we might add additional zones, for kids interested in

robotics, the environment, computers, math, or veterinary(兽医的) medicine and animals.

A study showed a 12% fall in the number of children admitted to hospital with sever asthma(哮喘) in the first year after the law to stop smoking in enclosed(封闭的)public places came into force. The author says there is growing evidence that many people are choosing smoke-free homes as well.

Asthma (哮喘病)UK says the findings are “encouraging”. Presenting their findings in the journal Pediatrics, they said the number of children admitted to hospital with severe asthma at-tacks was rising by more than 2 % a year before the restrictions were introduced in July 2007. Taking that into account, they calculated the fall in admissions in the next 12 months was 12%, and a further 3% in each of the following two years. The fall was seen among boys and girls of all ages, across wealthy and

poor neighborhoods, in cities and in rural areas.

In the past, much of the argument on the smoke-free law centred on protection of bar work-ers from passive smoke. At the time many critics said smokers would respond by lighting up more at home-harming the health of their families.

In fact, more people are insisting on smoke—free homes. We increasingly think it’s because people see the benefits of smoke-free laws in public places such as restaurants and they want to carry out them. This benefits children because they’ re less likely to be exposed to second-hand smoke. ^ .

These findings reinforce (强化)evidence on the effect of

smoke-free, law from studies in North America and Scotland, which also showed a fall in hospital admissions for children with se-vere asthma attacks. The law in England has also resulted in fewer admissions for heart attacks.

Emily Humphreys from Asthma UK said the need now was to do more to prevent young peo-ple from taking up smoking. 32.After the smoke-free law was introduced into England,----- A. children could also enjoy its benefits B. smokers lighted up more at home C. more children developed asthma D. workers suffered from passive smoke

33.The smoke-free law in England also reduced the risk of —— A.a high fever B.a terrible headache C. a heart attack D.stomach cancer 34. According to Emily, now they need to A.prevent tobacco from being sold

B.prevent the young from taking up smoking C.put up more no-smoking signs in public places D.inform people of the dangers of second-hand smoke 35.What’s the author’s purpose in writing this text? A.To introduce the benefits of the smoke-free law. B.To describe how to help children with asthma. C.To show that smoking is harmful to our health. D.To give advice on how to give up smoking. 【解析】 32A 33C 34B 35A
