Once a New Zealand teacher asked where I live. “In the white building,”I answered. “At our university both girls and boys live in the same dormitory.”I added. Beyond my expectation (出乎意料), however, my attempt (努力)to show I am speaking American English (AE ) turned out to be something else. The New Zealander seemed very puzzled (迷惑)at my answer.

With a half smile, she asked, “Really ?Do they live in the same room?”

“Oh, no. They live in different rooms but in the same building.”I reacted (反应)quickly.

Later I got to know the word “dormitory ”. In AE it means one building, whereas (而,却)it means one room in British English (BE ).

The New Zealander misunderstood me because she spoke New Zealander English (NE ), which, as we know, is much related to BE.

Nowadays, not a few English learners, who try to catch up with the fashion (时髦), choose to speak AE.

Yet, the problem is that they cannot speak pure AE, but half AE and half BE instead. I think it necessary to keep one style in order to avoid (避免)misunderstanding.

1970 was World Conservation (自然保护)Year. The United Nations wanted everyone to know that the world is in danger. They hoped that people would act quickly in order to conserve nature (大自然). Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were 1,300 different plants, trees and flowers in Holland, but now only 866 remain. The others have been destroyed by modern man. It is said that there are tens of thousands of kinds of animals in the world, but now many have died out (绝种). We are changing the earth, the air and water, and everything that grows and lives . We can't live without these things. If we continue like this, we shall destroy ourselves.

What will happen in the future ?Perhaps it is more important to ask “What must we do now ?”The people who will be living in the world of tomorrow are the young of today. A lot of them know that conservation is necessary. Many are helping to save our world. They plant trees, build bridges across rivers and so on. In a small town in the United States a large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometres of their river. Young people may hear about conservation through a record called “No one's going to change our world.”It was made by the Beatles, Cliff Richard and other singers. The money from it will help to conserve wild animals.

65、“No one's going to change our world ”was .

Think for a moment about the teachers you have had at school. Which one did you like best ?And why ?Were the teachers you liked best also the ones who were the best teachers in your opinion ?Before you read any further, consider for a minute the qualities that make a teacher good. Some very common answers to this question are that teachers need to love their students, that they need to have an expert knowledge of their subjects, and that they should devote themselves completely to their jobs. All of these ideas are, of course, true but they are a little too simple.

It is impossible for anyone to love everyone they know, and teachers deal with a very large number of students over the years. On the other hand, teachers should certainly be able to make their students feel that they are interested in them as people and in the development of both their brains and their characters. A deep knowledge of the subject is important, but equally important is the ability to pass that knowledge on to the students effectively. A teacher needs to be trained in the skills of teaching. These skills include how to control a class, and so on. Finally teachers have to devote a lot of time and energy to their work, of course. However, they are also models that their students must follow; so it is important that they should be well-balanced people with interests outside their school work-family, friends, hobbies, etc. A teacher who only lives for work is likely to become too narrow minded.

68、You think about your teachers in order to .

A 、respect them

B 、love them

C 、learn from them

D 、choose them

69、The underlined words “they ”and “them ”in the third line in the second paragraph refer to .

11

A 、teachers and teachers

B 、students and teacers

C 、students and students

70、Which of the following is true but too simple ?

A 、Teachers should have a good knowledge of their subjects.

B 、Teacher are able to pass the knowledge on to students.

C 、Teachers must be models that their students follow.

D 、Teachers are interested in their students as people.

71、From the passage, we can conclude that it is not easy for a teacher .

A 、to love the students he is teaching

B 、to have a good knowldege of the subject

C 、to be a model for his students to follow

D 、to spend much time on his work

E

What to do if you don't feel popular ?

●Try to take part in activities. Call your friends. Plan to do something. The worst feeling is staying home alone, because it makes you feel even more lonely.

●Try to make new friends. Choose friends carefully , not just because you think they're popular. And remember, making good friends takes time. Choosing a popular person to be friends with is okay. If they are nice.

●Think up your own ideas. These suggestions might not work for everyone. What to do if you have a problem with your teacher ?

12 ●Talk to your parents, or another adult who will listen to you and perhaps can help. Talk to your friends. Maybe they have had problems with the same teacher, too.

●Don't give the teacher a reason to have problems with you. Do your work, complete your task, attend the class seriously and take notes. Maybe you just need to give the teacher a chance (机会).

●Try to find out what the problem is.

●Talk to the teacher if you feel comfortable doing this. Don't be nasty (闹别扭的), but express your concerns (关心). Listen to the teacher, as well.

●Just accept the fact that you're not going to love all your teachers.

Good evening. Tonight's broadcast bring together music from different corners of the world. The records we have chosen for you are from classial Western music. Indian music and pop. In this broadcast we shall study the language of music. We shall try to find out how music expresses people's feelings. You'll hear a Beethoven piano piece and songs sung by a pop group and some black Americans. It will be natural if you like one more than the others. I shall be trying to explain why they are all good music. The feeling in each of the following compositions is sadness. You can find sadness in words, in paintings, and in music. Music is one form of art. It's like the spoken language but uses sounds differently. I shall be saying a few words after each record. Now, the piano piece by Beethoven.

Ways of Making Friends

Everyone needs friends, so how to make true friends is very important to anybody. To make friends, you must be friendly to others. A smile is like a magnet that draws peoople. Smile at others and you are always sure to get a smile in return. You should do your best to make a stranger feel at home, no matter where he happens to be. Think as you are in his position.

Try to remember other's names, which will make them feel that they have made an impression on you. If you don't agree with others on certain matter, don't argue but discuss with them. You should think more of others than of yourselves.

Finally, don't believe those who leave their friends when they are in trouble because “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”
