A

For many managers, “team building” means two days spent doing role-playing exercises in a conference hotel far from head office. But perhaps a more effective way to build teams is simply by playing real team sports, such as soccer, cricket or softball.

David Clark, a project manager at Atisreal UK, is one of the organizers of the company's two soccer teams. He says the main point is fitness but it also has another advantage:“It gives the guys a chance to meet and relax with their peers (同等地位的人) from other departments. It builds cross-company relationships.”

Louise Aston, a human resources director, takes a similar view, pointing out that as well as cuts through hierarchies (等级制度): “Not only does it promote health, it can knock leadership on the head. The person who's best at soccer could well be a person who works in the warehouse (库房). Then his confidence will be built.”

Another reason companies would like to promote team sports is that they are relatively cheep.

Peter Mills, chief health officer at Vielife, says:“The contributions a company might make towards running a sports team—paying its league fees, for example—are pretty small compared to other expenditure in the field of well-being.”

However, he warns, there is a potential downside. Sports are, by their nature, competitive and not everyone is good at them:“There are people who can be a bit self-conscious and you need to ensure you don't marginalize (忽视) them. So you might use introductory days that only beginners go to.” “The emphasis was on sports such as soccer and netball, but by way of recognition that not everyone likes sweaty exercise, there was also chess,” he added.

56.How many advantages of team sports are mentioned in the passage?

A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.

57.The underlined part “bringing disparate divisions together” might refer to ________.

A.building cross-company relationships

B.cutting through hierarchies

C.promoting health

D.bringing fun to the employees

这说明bringing disparate divisions together应指上文刚提到的It builds cross-company relationships。故选A。

58.We can learn that by cutting through hierarchies, ______.

A.the ordinary employees may be more confident

B.the employers' positions will be threatened

C.everyone will be equal regardless of sex, age and income

D.no one will be prejudiced inside the company

59.The purpose of the passage is to ________.

A.introduce the meaning of “team building”

B.explain why team sports is a new way of “team building”

C.narrate the characteristics of the team sports

D.stress different people have different characters

B(西南师大附中2010·第四次月考)

“Help! Help! Help!” a resident screamed over the phone, “I am being eaten alive by mosquitoes!”

Recent rainfalls have produced an early hit of blood-seeking mosquitoes. Once flooded, eggs laid during the drought along water banks hatch(孵化)quickly, flying off to seek hosts such as people, birds, and other animals.

The flood mosquitoes are big and aggressive. They chase you down, drill into your skin and take your blood, causing pain and itchiness. “I have lost a pint of blood to those suckers,” a Spring Hill resident claimed. “Mosquitoes are killing my kids,” a Ridge Manor woman shouted.

Residents are urged to protect themselves when going out, especially during the hours of dusk and dawn. Long-sleeve shirts, long pants, socks and hats will help keep mosquitoes at bay.

Mosquito Control has already received hundreds of service requests this month. When calling in, residents need to provide their name, address, phone number and nature of the problem. Technicians will respond by investigating the problem and making proper treatment and notification to resident.

Mosquitoes grow in almost any kind or amount of water. Controlling mosquito larvae(幼虫)is vital to mosquito control. Confined in their water habitat, larvae are treated and eliminated before they mature and “take to wing.” Field technicians check their areas searching for mosquitoes breeding in lakes, ponds, drainage ditches and they treat the water with a host of larvicides(杀幼虫剂).

It is important to understand that mosquito control is much more than sending a spray truck(airplane or helicopter in other counties)to kill adult mosquitoes. Night-time spraying is actually the last defense after all the above procedures have been done, but there are still mosquitoes present in the area.

60.The author writes the first paragraph in order to________.

A.make the public take action at once

B.attract readers to read the following contents

C.show that the people bothered by mosquitoes are helpless

D.criticize the government has done nothing

61.When do the eggs hatch according to the passage?

A.When the flood hits. B.During the drought.

C.After the flood leaves. D.When spring comes.

由第二段“Recent rainfalls have produced an early hit of blood-seeking mosquitoes. Once flooded,...”可知。

62.When are mosquitoes most dangerous?

A.At dawn and dusk. B.At noon.

C.In the late morning. D.At midnight.

由第四段首句“Residents are urged to protect themselves when going out, especially during the hours of dusk and dawn.”

63.When calling Mosquito Control, people should provide the following EXCEPT________.

A.their name and address

B.phone number

C.nature of the problem

D.marriage and possessions

由 第五段第二句“When calling in, residents need to provide their name, address, phone number and nature of the problem.”

C

Will the food crisis that is menacing (威胁) the lives of millions ease up or grow worse over time? The answer may be both. The recent rise in food prices has largely been caused by temporary problems like drought in Australia, Ukraine and elsewhere. Though the need for huge rescue operations is urgent, the present acute crisis will eventually end. But underlying it is a basic problem that will only intensify unless we recognize it and try to remedy (补救) it.

It is a tale of two peoples. In one version of the story, a country with a lot of poor people suddenly experiences fast economic expansion, but only half of the people share in the new prosperity. The favored ones spend a lot of their new income on food, and unless supply expands very quickly, prices shoot up. The rest of the poor now face higher food prices but no greater income, and begin to starve. Tragedies like this happen repeatedly in the world.

Much discussion is rightly devoted to the division between haves and have-nots in the global economy, but the world's poor are themselves divided between those who are experiencing high growth and those who are not. The rapid economic expansion in countries like India and Vietnam tends to sharply increase the demand for food. This is, of course, an excellent thing in itself, and if these countries could manage to reduce their unequal internal sharing of growth, even those left behind there would eat much better.

But the same growth also puts pressure on global food markets—sometimes through increased imports, but also through restrictions or bans on exports to moderate (缓和) the rise in

food prices at home, as has happened recently in countries like India, Vietnam and Argentina. Those hit particularly hard have been the poor, especially in Africa.

There is also a high-tech version of the tale of two peoples. Agricultural crops like corn and soybeans can be used for making ethanol (乙醇) for motor fuel. So the stomachs of the hungry must also compete with fuel tanks. The global food problem is not being caused by a falling trend in world production, or for that matter in food output per person. It is the result of accelerating demand. However, a demand-induced problem also calls for rapid expansion in food production, which can be done through more global cooperation.

64.The passage mainly tells us ________.

A.two tales of two peoples from different perspectives

B.how to bridge the gap between the haves and the have-nots

C.how to achieve balance between agriculture and technology

D.the reasons why the global food crisis occurs

65.Through the first tale of two peoples, the author attempts to stress that ________.

A.in many countries there is a sharp division between the rich and the poor

B.there are many rich countries and poor ones around the world

C.the world's poor are divided between those who are experiencing fast development and which are not

D.similar tragedies happen everywhere and will never stop

66.From the passage we can NOT infer that ________.

A.unbalanced development among countries explains the global food problem

B.high technology can convert crops into industrial fuel

C.reduction in world production and food output per person results in food crisis

D.increasing demand accounts for the global food problem

67.In the following paragraphs, ________ will probably be discussed.

A.how to solve the problem

B.the consequences of the problem

C.the historical examples of the problem

D.different people's ideas about the problem

故选A。

D

On April 10, 2008, scientists in Indonesia announced the discovery of a rare frog that has no lungs and breathes through its skin. Researchers believe that the little creature could provide some big clues as to how environmental factors can cause certain species to evolve so drastically (剧烈地)over time.

The frog was found in a remote part of the Indonesian island of Borneo during an expedition last summer. The unusual creature is the world's first known lungless frog species. Only a few amphibians share this unique quality.

David Bickford is a biologist at the National University of Singapore. He led the research team that came across the rare frog. “These are the most ancient and unusual frogs you can get

on the planet,” he says.

Indonesian biologist Iskander, a colleague of Bickford's, first spotted the frog in 1978 and has been searching for it ever since. But no one knew that the frog lacked lungs until the recent lab studies were conducted.

Bickford says it's possible that the frog may have evolved in order to adapt to the cold, fast-moving, and oxygen-rich streams in which it lives. The biologist adds that this “extreme adaption” was probably necessary to reduce the frog's ability to float. That way, it could keep itself from being swept down the mountainous rivers.

Scientists say that the new discovery has made it even more critical to protect the frog's river habitat. In the last few years, illegal logging (伐木) and gold mining have caused the onceclean waters to turn brown with pollution.

“The gold mining is completely illegal and smallscale,” Bickford says. “But when there are thousands of them on the river, the frogs will have to run out of the river.”

68.The frog is unusual most probably because ________.

A.it has no lungs at all

B.it doesn't use its lungs to breathe

C.it's the world's first lungless species

D.it can breathe either through its lungs or its skin

文章第一段说a rare frog that has no lungs and breathes through its skin,由此可知,这种青蛙根本就没有肺,而不是不用肺呼吸。

69.What might make the frog as it is today according to the passage?

A.Illegal logging.

B.The gold mining.

C.Its living conditions.

D.Changes of the climate.

70.When did the scientists discover that the frog has no lungs?

A.In 1978.

B.Not long before April 10, 2008.

C.On April 10, 2008.

D.Before the expedition last summer.

But no one knew that the frog lacked lungs until the recent lab studies were conducted,结合文章开头宣布此项发现的时间可知B项正确。

I will spend this summer holiday in the countryside.

Although the city is modern and convenient, there are still some problems, such as air pollution, crowdedness and noise. In the countryside I can enjoy a comfortable and quiet life. There, the air is fresh and the water is clean. Trees are green and birds are singing. I can also go boating, fishing and swimming in the lake. What's more, I can climb the hills. All this is interesting and good for my health.

Above all, I can learn more about nature. So I want to go to the countryside for a change. I'm looking forward to the coming of my summer holiday.
