There are many famous museums throughout the world where people can enjoy art. Washington, D.C. has the National Gallery of Art (美术馆); Paris has the Luvre; London, the British Museum. Florida International University (FIU) in Miami also shows art for people to see. And it does so without a building, or even a wall for its drawings and paintings. FIU has opened what it says is the first computer art museum in the United States. You don't have to visit the University to see the art. You just need a computer linked to a telephone. You can call the telephone number of a university computer and connect your own computer to it. All of the art is stored in the school computer. It is computer art, produced electronically by artists on their own computers. In only a few minutes, your computer can receive and copy all the pictures and drawings.

Robert Shostak is director of the new computer museum. He says he starts the museum because computer artists had no place to show their works.

A computer artist can only record his pictures electronically and send the records, or floppy discs, to others to see on their computers. He can also put his pictures on paper. But to print good pictures on paper, the computer artist needs an expensive laser printer.

Robert Shostak says the electronic museum is mostly for art or computer students at schools and universities. Many of the pictures in the museum are made by students. Mr Shostak said the FIU museum will make computer art more fun for computer artists because more people can see it. He says artists enjoy their work much more if they have an audience. And the great number of home computers in America could mean a huge audience for the electronic museum. 36. The main purpose of this text is to give information about .

A. museums throughout the world B. an electronic art museum in Miami, U.S.A. C. art exhibitions in Florida International University D. latest development of computer art

37. To see the art in FIU museum, you need . A. floppy discs B. a computer and a printer C. pictures and drawings on paper

D. a computer connected to the museum by telephone line 38. The museum was started when .

A. Robert Shostak wanted to do something for computer scientists B. Robert Shostak wanted to help computer artists C. art students needed a place to show their works D. computer scientists wanted to do something about art 39. The words “an audience” in the last paragraph refer to . A. art students B. computer owners C. exhibits in the museum D. those who will enjoy art

B

Insurance companies provide a service to the community by protecting it against expected and unexpected disasters. Before an insurance company will agree to insure anything, it collects accurate figures about the risk. It knows, for example, that the risk of a man being killed in a plane accident is less than the risk he takes in crossing a busy road. This enables it to quote (报价) low figures for travel insurance. Sometimes the risk may be high, as in motor-racing or mountaineering. Then the company charges a much higher price. If too many climbers have accidents, the price rises further. If the majority of climbers fall off mountains, the company will refuse to insure them.

An ordinary householder may wish to protect his home against fire or his property against burglary (入室行窃). A shopkeeper may wish to insure against theft. In normal cases, the company will check its statistics and quote a premium (保险费). If it is suspicious (可疑的), it may refuse to quote. If it insures a shop and then receives a suspicious claim, it will investigate the claim as a means of protecting itself against false claims. It is not unknown for a businessman in

debt to burn down his own premises so that he can claim much money from his insurance company. He can be sure that the fire will be investigated most carefully. Insurance companies also accept insurance against shipwreck or disaster in the air. Planes and ships are very expensive, so a large premium is charged, but a reduction is given to companies with an accident-free record.

Every week, insurance companies receive premium payments from customers. These payments can form a very large total running into millions of dollars. The company does not leave the money in the bank. It invests (投资) in property, shares (股票), farms and even paintings and stamps. Its aim is to obtain the best possible return on its investment. This is not as greedy as it may seem since this is one way by which it can keep its premiums down and continue to make a profit while being of service to the community. 40. The main idea of the first paragraph is that ____.

A. insurance companies protect the community against disasters B. insurance companies often collect accurate figures about the risk C. insurance companies base their decisions on the risk involved D. insurance companies charge different prices in the same cases

41. The insurance company will usually investigate a suspicious claim to ____.

A. refuse to quote the insurance fee B. make sure that the claim is reasonable C. decide how much the company should pay D. find out when the accident happened 42. The underlined word “premises” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “____”.

A. land and buildings B. insurance contract (合同) C. debt papers D. financial papers 43. The purpose of this passage is to ____.

A. encourage people to invest in insurance companies B. persuade people to insure against unexpected disasters C. explain how insurance companies operate D. advise people how to insure their life and property

C

You’ve heard the saying: if you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when

you get there. Thousands of successful people attribute most of their success to goal setting. Knowing this, why don’t the majority of people set goals?

Goal setting starts within you. You have to believe it’s possible to do a thing before you will have a strong desire to write it down on paper and take steps to make it happen.

How do you possibly bring yourself to believe in your own success? After all, so many of you have been at this success thing for a while and it still hasn’t happened to you. Companies that you believed in and worked hard for having failed, your family and friends are waiting for you to “be realistic”, and life just keeps giving you one blow after another. But there is a small fire burning inside of you. You keep at it because all you know is you can’t continue to get up every morning , go to work for someone else and allow them to determine how much you’re worth each week which is far below your true value.

So where do you go from here? Where do you start today? The road to inner belief in your success begins with you telling yourself every day, throughout the day, that you can do what you set out to do, you can have what you set out to get, and you can be that successful person you know that lives inside you. Yes, obstacles will come, doubters will be around, but don’t you be one of them.

Treat yourself like the person you love and care about most. If you had children who had a paper route and they wanted to accomplish a goal but they kept running into obstacles, what would happen? They would soon become discouraged with so many people telling them no. I’m not interested in what you have to offer. What would you say to your child ? I’m sure it won’t be the same thing you’ve been saying to yourself. Turn your words around. Speak those same words of encouragement you would speak to your discouraged child, to yourself, If you would never put a loved one down, especially when they are feeling discouraged why would you do that to yourself? You have the power within to stop it right now and turn it around.

Be committed(表示出明确意图的)from this point forward, to speak words of encouragement to yourself. The mind is an amazing thing. You can convince yourself of anything over time. If you repeatedly tell yourself every day, throughout the day, how successful you are, how capable you are, you will not only start to believe it, you will start to live it. 44.What does the author mean by saying “Turn your words around?” A.You should speak words of encouragement to your discouraged child. B.You shouldn’t put a loved one down. C.You should encourage yourself.

D.You should change the subject of the conversation.

45.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A.Thousands of successful people owe most of their success to goal setting. B.The majority of people set goals in order to succeed. C.We can bring ourselves to believe in our own success. D.We should say words of encouragement to ourselves. 46.According to the author, how should you treat yourself? A.Treat yourself like an innocent child.

B.Treat yourself like a hero who can do everything. C.Treat yourself like a fool who can’t achieve anything. D.Treat yourself like the person you care and love most.

47.In the eyes of the author, is what you should do to set a goal. A.being ambitious to do whatever you like to do. B.telling yourself time and again that you can do it

C.treating yourself like the person you love and care about most D.convincing others that you are quite capable

D

Sir William Osler has a few words for you: “In the life of a young man the most essential thing for happiness is the gift of friendship.” Truer words were never spoken. For what more could you ask than comradeship during the peaks and valleys of life? To whom else but a close, valuable friend can you brag(吹嘘) about your successes and complain about your failures or losses?

What is a “good friend”? How is he best described? Well, it has been my observation that although many will cry with you, few can sincerely rejoice with you. Therefore, in my opinion, a good friend is one who can enjoy your successes without envy; one who can say, “That was wonderful! You can do it again, even better if you want!” and mean it. Nothing taxes a friendship more than the prosperity of one and not the other. Even the closest of friendships (and marriages) often cannot resist such pressure and fail. No wonder many minor friendships go down the drain(每况愈下) for the same reason.

A person of good character and sound moral fiber, of honor and humor, courage and belief is

a friend to be sought and treasured-for there are few. Too often do we hear, “If you can count your good friends on more than one hand, consider yourself blessed.” And even then I would add, “Even if you have lost two fingers of that hand to the electric saw.”

What makes a friendship last? Well, I don’t know all the answers, but one of my observations is that most good friends usually have similar tastes. They generally like and dislike many of the same things. There also usually seems to exist a similarity of personality traits-especially in the fundamental values of life such as honesty, sincerity, loyalty, and dependability. More often than not, birds of a feather do fly together. I don’t think it matters a lot whether one prefers jazz or hockey to another’s Mazart or ballet. Much other matters far more: confiding(倾诉), relying, sharing, giving, getting, enjoying; a sympathetic ear always there; criticism when it can help; praise-even if only because it would help. With not many people on this earth will you find this much in common. When you find one, hang on to him, for a good friend found is a rare treasure. 48.The function of Paragraph 1 is to introduce _________.

A.a famous saying C.a famous person

B.the topic for discussion D.two different attitudes

49.What is the meaning of the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?

A.People don’t have to pay taxes to develop friendship with others.

B.Good fortune and success of one person can promote his friendship with others. C.Friendship can be affected by the difference in fortune and success between friends. D.Nothing can affect friendship because it has gone through the peaks and valleys of life.

50.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?

A.One is lucky to have many friends. B.A friends should have a good character.

C.We should count our friends on more than one hand. D.A true friend should be treasured because there are few.

51.According to the passage, which of the following plays the LEAST important role in a

long-lasting friendship?

A.Hobbies.

B.Tastes.

C.Personality. E

D.Sympathy.

A quality education is the basic liberator.it can free people from poverty, giving them the power to greatly improve their lives and take a productive place in society. It can also free communities and countries, allowing them to jump forward into periods of wealth and social unity that otherwise would not be possible.

For this reason, the international community has devoted itself to getting all the world’s children into primary school by 2015,a task known as Education for All.

Can education for aIl be achieved by 2015? The answer is undoubtedly “yes,”although it is a difficult task.If we now measure the goal in terms of children successfully completing at least five years of primary school, instead of just enrolling(注册)for classes, which used to be the measuring stick for education, then the task becomes even more difficult.Only 32 countries were formerly believed to be at risk of not achieving education for all on the basis of enrollment. The number rises to 88 if completion of primary school is used as the standard.

Still, the goal is achievable with the right policies and the right support from the international community.59 of the 88 countries at risk can reach universal primary completion by 2015 if they bring the effectiveness and quality of their education systems into line with standards observed in higher-performing systems. They also need great increases in outside support. The 29 countries falling farthest behind will not reach the goal without extra fast speed of progress. But this is achievable with creative solution, including use fo information technologies, enough foreign aid, and fewer people living in poverty.

A key lesson of experience about what makes development effective is that a country’s ability to use aid well depends heavily on its policies, institutions and management.Where a country scores well on these, foreign assistance can be highly effective.

52.Ideally, the goal of the program of Education for All is to ____________by 2015.

A.enroll all the world’s children into primary school B.get all the world’s children to complete primary school C.give quality education to people of 88 countries

D.support those devoted to changing their education systems

53.________ countries are now at risk of not achieving education for all on the basis of completing 5 years of primary school.

A.88

B.32

C.29

D.59

54.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT mentioned as the right policy?

A.Raising the effectiveness of education systems. B.Improving the quality of education. C.Using information technologies. D.Building more primary schools.

55.As can be gathered from the last paragraph, foreign aid______.

A.is provided only when some standards are met B.may not be highly effective C.alone makes development possible

D.is most effective for those countries falling farthest behind
