第二节:阅读理解(共7小题;每小题2分,满分14分)

(1)

When you think of forest, what do you see? Just trees? Or do you see many other things, such as singing birds, colorful plants and wild flowers?

The forest is a whole world of its own. It is full of many different living things. But even though they are all different, they have one thing in common: they all need each other in order to live on. The trees feed the forest \making food in their leaves; by using sunlight to join water and minerals(矿物质)from the soil and air. Their deep network of roots joins the soil together and stops it from dying out, making it possible for living things to live in it。

Human beings are like the living things in the forest. We need one another in order to live. We need the farmers to grow our food, railroad and truck drivers to bring it to our shops and clerks to sell it to us. We need people to prepare our food and cook it and others to take our waste things away.

Then, of course, we need doctors, nurses, government officials, mailmen, telephone operators, and many others. We also need other human beings in another way. We need people for friendship, to talk over our problems, exchange ideas. Think how lonely and unhappy you would be if you lived all alone.

Life is a matter of giving and taking. We need to help other people as much as we need other people to help us. Think what a good feeling you have when you have done something for someone else. You know, being a volunteer is so great!

Maybe you know floods, droughts, earthquakes, sandstorms and so on. But have you ever heard of typhoons?

Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean and the South

China Sea. Most happen in July, August and September.

How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates(蒸发)into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky. Then, cooler air rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles, and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 meters a second, a typhoon begins.

A typhoon has two parts. One is called the “eye”. In the eye, the wind does not move

so fast. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. This is where the strongest winds and hardest rains are.

Typhoons are very dangerous. In 2004, Typhoon Yunna killed 164 people in Zhejiang, And 24 people were missing. In May 2006, Typhoon Pearl hit Guangdong and Fujian, and thousands of houses were damaged.

What to do when a typhoon hits:

— stay inside. close all the windows and stay away from them. — Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your bikes!

— Listen to the radio or watch TV for important information. — If you’ re told to go to a safer place, do so right away. ( ) 70. Typhoons often happen____.

Mom and Dad are two of the most important; people in your life. You probably see at

least one of them every day. And, they’re likely to influence you more than anyone else you will meet in your lifetime. So if your mom loves to read, you just might grow up carrying a book wherever you go, just like she does.

But parents do a lot more than just passing on their hobbies. Moms and dads care for their kids from the minute they were born. They are the people we should respect and love best. It’s very important to stay close, get along well, and build a strong relationship with your parents. But not every child knows how to do this. Here are some ways to help you:

Spend time together. Instead of playing a computer game or watching TV, ask your mom and dad to play with you. Go outside together, or read a book out loud.

Be kind. Little things might mean a lot to your mom and dad. You can brighten a parent’s day with a hug, a card, or a joke. It’s also lovely when a kid cleans up his or her room without being asked. And if you try not to fight with your brothers or sisters, your parents might be very happy.

Do your best at whatever you do. You don’t have to be perfect, but when you do your best, you make your parents proud: It makes them happy to see how you’re turning into a great kid. Why? Because it lets them know you’re doing a good job.

If you drive, you must always wear a seat belt and you’d better not drive too fast. You should slow down at the traffic lights. You must never drink wine before driving.
