Passage One 读写课本section B原文

Most people love Michael Jordan. He’s the NBA’s No. 1 player who can run fast, jump high and shoot well. All these things are true, but there are other truths about Michael that are not so easily seen: his understanding of teamwork, his competitive spirit and his love for the game. It is these truth that form the deepest connection between Michael and me.

After coaching him for eight seasons, I still wonder at Michael’s love for the game that moves us, even in practice games. I mean, he never takes a day off. One thing about Michael is that he takes nothing about his game for granted. When he first came to the NBA back in 1984, his outside shooting was not perfect, and he began to practice shooting hundreds of shots each day. In the end, he became a real three-point shooter. Playing outstanding defense didn’t come straight to him, either. He had to study his opponents, learn their usual moves and then try hard to learn the skills necessary to stop them. He works extremely hard to perfect his footwork and his balance.

Today, so many young people come to the game with the thought that talent is all they need for success. Michael thinks the other way. He knows his weaknesses, and for me, one of the signs of Michael’s greatness is that he has turned his weaknesses into strengths.

Another of the qualities I respect most about Michael is his performance on the court. Whilst he is very competitive, he always respects the other players, whether they are on his team or on the other side. Often, he gives a hand to an opponent who falls down. He is definitely not the type of player who would try to build himself up by tearing someone else down. This is an act of leadership. Through his outstanding performance on the court, he has won love and respect from both his teammates and opponents.

Every season, Michael makes himself available to groups of children with serious diseases. He puts them at ease, lets them have a laugh, and makes it possible for them to enjoy basketball. When Michael retires, I only hope that young players like Grant Hill and Kobe Bryant will be

Passage Two (实用大学英语读写教程 Part E两篇)

One has become a society of employees. A hundred years or so ago only one of every five Americans at work was employed, i.e., worked for somebody else. Today only one out of five is not employed but working for himself. And when fifty years ago “being employed” meant working as factory laborer or as a farmland, the employee of today is increasingly a middleclass person with a substantial formal education, holding a professional or management job requiring intellectual and technical skills. Indeed, two things have characterized the fastest-growing groups in our working population—growing so fast that the industrial worker, the oldest child of the Industrial Revolution, has been losing in numerical importance despite the expansion of industrial production.

Yet you will find little if anything written on what it is to be an employee. You can find a

great deal of very dubious advice on how to get a job or how to get a promotion. You can also find a good deal of work in a chosen field, whether it be the mechanist’s trade or bookkeeping. Every one of these trades requires different skills, sets different standards, and requires a different preparation. Yet they all have employeeship in common. And increasingly, especially in the large business or in government, employeeship is more important to success than the special professional knowledge or skill. Certainly more people fail because they do not know the requirements of being an employee than because they do not adequately possess the skills of their trade; the higher you climb the ladder, the more you get into administrative or executive work, and the greater the emphasis on ability to work within the organization rather than on technical abilities or professional knowledge.

26. It is implied that fifty years ago ______.

A) eighty percent of American working people were employed in factories B) twenty percent of American intellectual were employees

C) the percentage of intellectual in the total work force was almost the same as that of industrial workers

D) the percentage of intellectuals working as employees was not so large as that of industrial workers

27. According to the passage, with the development of modern industry, ______. A) factory laborers will overtake intellectual employees in number B) there are as many middle-class employees as factory laborers C) employees have attached great importance to factory laborers

D) the proportion of factory laborers in the total employee population has decreased 28. The words dubious (Line 2, Para. 2) most probably means______. A) valuable B) useful C) doubtful D) helpful 29. According to the writer, professional knowledge or skill is_______. A) less important than awareness of being a good employee B) as important as the ability to deal with public relations C) more important than employer-employee relations

D) as important as the ability to cooperate with others in organization 30. From the passage we know that the relationship helps one ______. A) to be more successful in his career B) to be more specialized in his field C) to solve technical problems

D) to develop his professional skill
