How do people traditionally manufacture (制造) things? They usually start with a sheet of metal, wood or other material and cut, drill (钻) and shave it to create a desired shape. Sometimes, they use a mold (模具) made of metal or sand, pour liquid plastic or metal into it and let it cool to create a solid part.

Now, a completely different method is gaining popularity.

On Oct. 9, 2015, London Science Museum kicked off its new exhibition, 3-D: Printing the Future, with over 600 3-D printed objects on display, including space probes (探测器), toy dolls and even human organs – basically any product you can think of, reported Live Science.

You might find it hard to believe that an object can actually be ―printed out‖ like a picture. But it is not that hard to understand how it works. Just as a traditional printer sprays(喷洒) ink onto paper line by line, modern 3-D printers spread material onto a surface layer by layer, from the bottom to the top, gradually building up a shape.

Instead of ink, the materials the 3-D printer uses are mainly plastic, resin (树脂) and certain metals. The thinner each layer is – from a millimeter to less than the width of a hair – the smoother and finer the object will be. And objects always come out in one piece, sparing you the trouble of putting different parts together afterward.

For example, 10 years ago a desktop 3-D printer might have cost £20,000 (200,000 yuan), while now it costs only about £1,000, according to the BBC. In fact, 3-D printers have been around for some time, but until recently they hadn’t been very popular since few people could afford them. Last year, though, saw a big decrease in the price of 3-D printers.

However, as 3-D printing technology becomes more commonplace(普通的), it may trigger(引起) certain problems. One of them is piracy (盗版). ―Once you can download a coffee maker, or print out a new set of kitchen utensils (餐具) on your personal 3-D printer, who will visit a retail (零售的) store again?‖ an expert on 3-D printing told Forbes News.

Even more frightening, the world’s first 3-D printed gun was successfully fired in the US in May of this year, which means that 3-D printing could potentially give more people access to weapons.

Patients and doctors alike have long believed in the healing (痊愈) power of humor. It is claimed that humor not only affects patients’ moods, but can actually help them recover faster.

Several studies seem to support this. Patients in better spirits are known to have higher immune(免疫的) cell counts. Some have even claimed to have healed themselves of serious illnesses by reading comics and watching comedies.

Despite all this, many researchers are not convinced. They point out the fact that many sufferings have been known to disappear naturally, with or without a daily dose of laughter. They also say that while optimism in general does seem to be related to better health, it is hard to tell which comes first.

Humor in times of stress, however, clearly makes us feel better. On one level, it takes our minds off our troubles and relaxes us. On another, it releases powerful endorphins, a chemical produced by your body that reduces pain.

There are cases where the appreciation of a good joke is indeed directly related to a person’s health. It can show, for example, whether a person has suffered damage to one particular area of the brain: the right frontal lobe (额叶).

D. Negative.

Scientists confirmed this by having people read jokes and asking them to choose the funniest endings from a list. Subjects with normal brains usually chose endings that were based on a relatively complex synthesis (综合) of ideas. Subjects with specifically located brain damage, however, responded only to slapstick (闹剧) endings, which did not depend on a particular context. When pressed, the brain-damaged subjects saw the logic in the correct endings. They simply did not find them funny.

Of course, humor is largely an individual matter. Next time your friend does not get one of your jokes, there is no need to accuse him of being a lamebrain. However, you might suggest that he lighten up—for the health of it.

67. We can infer from the passage that ________.

A. all researchers have agreed on the healing power of humor B. people seldom accuse their friends of not understanding jokes C. reading comics will surely become a popular way of treating diseases D. the author holds a positive attitude to the healing power of humor 68. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Patients in bad moods are known to have higher immune cell counts. B. Many researchers are not convinced of the healing power of humor. C. Optimism in general does seem to be related to better health. D. People should try their best to cheer up for their good health.

69. Scientists had some people read jokes and asked them to choose the funniest endings from a list to confirm that ________.

A. the brain-damaged people are different from those with normal brains B. a person suffering certain brain damage doesn’t appreciate a good joke C. a person with a normal brain usually responds to slapstick endings D. humor takes our minds off our troubles by releasing powerful endorphins 70. Which would be the best title for the passage?

A. Which comes first, humor or health?

D

For years I have been asked by several people how and why I came to translate a novel by Virginia Woolf in 1945. I graduated from the University of Ankara in 1941 and my four teachers, including Orphan Burian, are members of the Translation Bureau who prepared a list of works to be translated into Turkish and set themselves to translating some of these, besides shouldering the heavy work of correcting or editing the translations submitted to the Bureau. Orphan Burian, now mostly known for his translations of Shakespeare, had started to translate To the Lighthouse for the

201606阶段练习高二英语 第5页

B. Humor can cure different illnesses

C. Humor contributes to good health D. People need humor in times of stress

Translation Bureau, but at the same time he wanted to do something from Shakespeare. So he transferred it to me.

For me, To the Lighthouse was love at first sight or rather at first reading. To translate a book, I first read it from the beginning to the end. Then I started writing each sentence by hand. When I finished the whole book I read my translation from the beginning to the end, checking it with the original, and making corrections. Then I typed it, and read the typed copy, making changes again. All in all that added up to five readings. I started translating the novel in 1943 and submitted it to the Bureau in 1944. It was published in 1945 under the general title of ―New English Literature‖ in the series called ―Translations from World Literature‖ known as the ―Classical Series‖.

So, the first book by Virginia Woolf in Turkish appeared in 1945, and it was To the Lighthouse. This was eighteen years after its publication in England in 1927. To me the book itself was pure poetry; I read it as if in a dream. Not trying to dive very deeply into it, I sort of swam on it or over it. Now, years later, I swim in it. Even after so many years, in each reading I become conscious of new layers of which I haven’t been aware before. It keeps pace with my experiences in life as years go by, and each reading is a new reading for me.

In 1982 and again in 1989 I revised it for two new editions and I again did it sentence by sentence checking it with the original. In those years I had thought it was necessary to revise my translations every ten years, but now I think I must do it every three or four years. In a country like Turkey, where we work very hard to clear our language from old and new foreign words, we should try to be up to date as to the words we are using, and of the same importance are the studies being made on the methods or techniques of translation, and new approaches in translation.

While translating, I usually have both the writer and the reader in mind. The novels she wrote after 1920 were especially new for most of the readers. She usually uses very short sentences, followed by rather long ones. I remember sentences of more than ten lines which weren’t easy for me to translate as they were. And in Turkish our having only one word, the word ―O‖, for ―he‖, ―she‖, ―it‖ in English, made me repeat the names of the characters more often than Woolf did. And I changed some long indirect sentences in the original into direct sentences in my translation, thinking it would make an easier reading in Turkish.

When translating, I make use of all kinds of dictionaries. A difficult English word for me is the word ―vision‖. In To the Lighthouse, the artist Lily Briscoe is trying to finish the picture she has been drawing for some time and the novel ends with the following sentences: ―Yes, she thought, laying down her brush extremely tired, I’ve had my vision.‖ And I’m still thinking about how to translate this remark into Turkish.

71. How and why did the writer come to translate To the Lighthouse? A. She was the only qualified person for it.

B. It was really a piece of good luck. C. Virginia Woolf was very familiar to her. D. She was a member of the Translation Bureau. 72. What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 mean? A. The writer prefers the work very much. B. The writer likes the sport swimming. C. The writer is aware of her advantages. D. The writer has digested the book very well.

73. Why does the writer revise her translations more often now? A. Readers make new demands. B. Turkish is a language of mobility.

C. Many mistakes are spotted in the old edition. D. She wants to make it more popular in the market.

74. While translating, the writer repeated the names of the characters to_________. A. make full use of the direct sentences B. emphasize all of these characters C. make her translation much briefer D.make her translation clearer in Turkish

75. The last paragraph mainly implies that_________. A. the writer is taking up a difficult job B. English is a difficult language in the world C. the writer’s translation needs improving D. remarks from characters are difficult to translate

How Technology Can Help Language Learning

Intelligence, according to Howard Gardner, is of eight types—verbal-linguistic, logical-mathematical,

musical-rhythmic,

visual-spatial,

bodily-kinesthetic,

interpersonal,

intrapersonal, and naturalistic. This is the first in a series of posts that explore and understand how each of the above forms of intelligence is affected by technology-mediated education.

Verbal-linguistic Intelligence involves sensitivity to spoken and written language, the ability to learn languages, and the capacity to use language to accomplish goals. Such intelligence is developed by three specific activities: reading, writing and interpersonal communication—both written and oral.

The traditional tools that have been used to efficiently develop verbal/linguistic intelligence—textbook, pencil, and paper—are giving way to technology in many schools. E-books, Internet lesson plans, online assignments and word processing software, or a subset of the above, are now common in schools. Technology allows addition of multisensory (多种感觉的) elements that provide meaningful contexts to help comprehension, thus expanding the learning ground of language and linguistics.

Research into the effect of technology on the development of the language and literacy skills vis-à-vis reading activities of children has offered evidence for favorable effects of digital-form books. A study shows that digital reading materials have become common in developing countries in early childhood classrooms to support engagement in storybooks while enhancing the emergent literacy (早期读写能力) among children. E-books are also being increasingly used to teach reading among beginners and children with reading difficulties.

Technology can be used to improve reading ability in many ways. It can enhance (加强) and sustain the interest levels for children by allowing immediate feedback on performance and providing added practice when necessary. Recent research shows that students are able to improve their sight word vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension through computer-based reading.

Technology can also help in improvement of writing skills. Word processing software promotes not only composition but also editing and revising in ways that streamline the task of writing. Desktop publishing and web-based publishing allow the work to be taken beyond the classroom into a virtual world that allows more constructive interactions.

Technology enhanced oral communication is indeed useful in that it allows students from remote locations, or from all over the world to communicate orally through video and audio conferencing tools. For example, students of languages in Australian universities overcome the problem of insufficient contact with native language speakers by using online audio and video tools that allow the development of aural, vocal and visual-cognition skills that are important in verbal and linguistic education. Oral group discussions in the form of video conferencing can help non-native speakers of a language with natural language negotiation and cultural intonations in ways that have not been possible due to geographic isolation.

Computer definitely aided language learning and computer mediated communication enhance teaching and learning experiences in the areas of linguistics and language intelligence. Right after the Second World War, Germany was in ruins. Almost all the houses, factories and schools were destroyed. Plenty of people were homeless as well as jobless. Worse still, the supply of water and electricity was often cut off in the city. Two American journalists interviewed a German family living in the basement. The husband was disabled from the war and the wife was just dismissed from a clothing company. Worse still, there were bills for them to pay—four children to care for and food to buy. Life was hard for them at that time.

After the interview, the journalists chatted with each other on the way back to the company.

―Do you think the Germans could rebuild their homeland?‖ ―Absolutely.‖

―But I can’t see any hope for the country at all. How can you be so certain about that?‖

―Have you noticed what they put on the table in the basement? There was a vase of flowers. A nation, suffering at such moment, hasn’t forgotten about flowers. It shows that hopes are not lost. They are still able to dream. A nation with hope can create miracles(奇迹). They are sure to be able to rebuild their homeland.‖ 【写作内容】

Two Americans journalists interviewed a German family after the war. Though living a poor life, the family still placed flowers on the table, which convinced a journalist that Germans were bound to rebuild their homeland.

As is often the case, a man who can dream will try hard to overcome any difficulties and live his dream. Therefore, I agree that dreams can change one’s life. Take my friend Tom for example. He was an energetic boy who was always dreaming of becoming a player in a school basketball team. However, at the beginning almost everyone persuaded him out of his dream because he wasn’t tall enough. He didn’t lose heart, though. With determination, he practised playing basketball in his spare time, making hismself a successful player in our school team.

From my point of view, dreams play an important part in changing my life. To realize my dream, first of all, I should focus my effort on my studies. In addition, when faced with failure, I choose never to give up. Last but not least, I should develop such skills as problem-solving ability and communication skill. :高二英语听力材料

Miss Susan Brown is 25 years old and has been a night nurse at a hospital since last April. She works 6 nights a week from 9:15 at night to 8:00 the next morning. She worked as an office cleaner before she came to the hospital, but she hadn’t enjoyed that experience at all. It is perhaps surprising that Susan chose to work at night. She felt she needed a change for one thing. And for another, she hoped to become a head nurse at last. She has also found that a night nurse’s work is physically less demanding than a cleaner’s, and she can sleep 8 hours during the day.

Of course, there are some problems in her daily life. The most serious problem is the headaches she gets from the dim light in the hospital. She doesn’t have time to wash her long hair and she has to learn to pack all her social activities into 6 days out of a fortnight. But on the whole, she feels very happy.
