While I was waiting to enter university,I saw advertised in a local newspaper a teaching post at a school in a suburb of London about ten miles from where I lived. Being very short of money, I applied.

Three days later, a letter arrived, asking me to go to Croydon for an interview. It proved a tiring journey: a train to Croydon station; a ten-minute bus ride and then a walk of at least fifteen minutes.

It was clearly the headmaster himself that opened the door. He was short and fat, with a grey-colored moustache,a deeply lined face and hardly any hair.

He looked at me with surprised disapproval. Then he said. “You’d better come inside.” Leading me into his study, he started to ask me a number of questions: what subjects I had taken in my General School Certificate;how old I was; what games I played; whether I thought games were an important part of a boy’s education, etc. I said something about not attaching too much importance to them. We obviously had very little in common.

The teaching arrangement filled me with fear. I was to divide the class of twenty-four boys, aged from seven to thirteen, into three groups and teach them all subjects—including art, football, cricket and so on—in turn at three different levels. Actually, I was depressed at the thought of teaching algebra and geometry—two subjects in which I had been rather weak at school.

I said shyly, “What would my salary be?” “Twelve pounds a week plus lunch.” Before I could speak, he got to his feet. “Now,” he said, “you’d better meet my wife. She’s the one who really runs this school.”

This was the last thing I could hear. I was young. How could my dignity allow me to work under an old woman?

22. What was the man’s first attitude towards the writer?

23. Which subjects was the writer poor at?

A. Art and cricket. C. Art and football. A. Reject the job

B. Football and cricket. D. Algebra and geometry, B. Take the job.

24. What would the writer probably do finally?

C. Meet the man’s wife. D. Discuss more job details.

Throughout your life, you spend the most time being with or dealing with yourself, but it is exactly yourself that you have the least understanding of. When you are going upwards in life, you tend to think too highly of yourself. When you are going downhill, you tend to have too low an opinion of yourself. It’s likely that you think it wise for yourself to know your place and keep yourself from lacking courage to face whatever problem you meet with, in which case your energy and creativity would remain far from enough for your age.

To get a thorough understanding of oneself is to gain a correct view of oneself and be a clear-minded realistic person-knowing both one’s strength and shortage. You may look forward hopefully to the future but be sure not to expect too much, for dreams can never be fully realized. You may be brave to meet challenges, but it should be clear to you where to direct your efforts.

To get a thorough understanding of oneself needs self-appreciation. Whether you hold yourself as a big tree or a thin piece of grass, whether you think you are a high mountain or a small stone, you show a state of nature that has its own reason of existence. If you really admire yourself, you’ll have a real sense of self-appreciation which will give you self-confidence. As soon as you gain full confidence in yourself, you’ll be enabled to fight and defeat any trouble that will otherwise defeat you.

To get a thorough understanding of oneself also requires that you show yourself loving concern about your health and daily life. Unless you know perfectly well when and how to do yourself a favor, you won’t be confident and ready enough even to resist the attack of illness.

Therefore, just do yourself a favor whenever it’s needed. In time of anger, do yourself a favor by giving an exit to it in a quiet place so that you won’t be hurt by the anger itself; in time of sadness, do yourself a favor by sharing it with your friends so as to change a sad mood into a cheerful one; in time of tiredness, do yourself a favor by getting a good sleep or some other relaxation.

All in all, to get a thorough understanding of oneself is to get a full control one’s life. Then one will find one’s life full of color, pleasure and achievement.

28. According to Paragraph 1, if we achieve great success in life, we may .

A. know our place

B. go downhill next

C. become too proud D. realize our shortage

27. Where is this passage most probably taken from?

29. Where does our self-confidence come from?

A. Our self-appreciation. C. Our natural existence. A. By presenting figures. C. By making comparisons. A. Self-education. C. Self-appreciation.

B. Our courage to fight. D. Our strength and shortage. B. By analyzing cause and effect. D. By giving advice on different cases. B. Self-confidence. D. Self-understanding. D

Future historians will be in a particular position when they come to record the history of our own times. They will hardly know which facts to select from the great mass of evidence that’s always increasing. What is more, they will not have to rely only oh the written word. Films, videos, CDs and CD-ROMs are just some of the huge amount of information they will have. They will be able, as it were, to see and hear us in action. But the historian attempting to show the distant past again is always faced with a difficult task. He has to make proper use of evidence available to draw reasonable conclusions. Good news is that even evidence that may appear unimportant can shed light on the history of early man. Up to now, historians have assumed that calendars came into being with the appearance of agriculture, for man of that time was faced with a real need to understand something about the seasons. Recent scientific evidence seems to suggest that this assumption is incorrect

Historians have long been puzzled by dots, lines and symbols which have been carved on walls, bones and so on. The nomads (游牧者) who made these markings lived by hunting and fishing during the last Ice Age which began about 35,000 B.C. and ended about 10,000 B.C. By comparing and analyzing markings made in various parts of the world, historians have been able to read this difficult “language”. They have found that it is connected with the passing of days and the stages of the moon. It is, in fact, a primitive type of calendar. It has long been known that the hunting scenes drawn on walls were not simply a form of expression of art. They had a certain meaning, for they were as near as early man could get to writing. It is possible that there is a certain relation between these, paintings and the markings that sometimes accompany them. It seems that man was making a real effort to understand the seasons 20,000 years earlier than has been supposed.

32. What does the underlined words “shed light on” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A. Make people puzzled at. C. Help people understand, A. The passing of days. C. The early agricultural tools.:

B. Serve as an example of. D. Cause misunderstanding of. B. The brightness of the sun. D. The early forms of writing.

30. How is Paragraph 5 developed?

31. What’s this passage mainly about?

33. Which of the following is linked to what some early markings show?

34. What can we infer from this passage?

A. Agriculture existed thanks to calendars. B. Calendars appeared thanks to Agriculture. C. Agriculture started long before calendars appeared D. Calendars appeared long before agriculture started A. To entertain. B. To inform.

C. To criticize.

D. To advise.

35. What’s the Writer’s purpose in writing this passage? 第二节: (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据每文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

What do you know about the standard of living of a country? It actually means how much of the goods and services the country produces for an average person to share. 36 Obviously, the first factor is its ability to produce wealth. “Wealth” in this sense doesn’t refer to money. It’s because we don’t live on money but on things that money can buy, “goods” such as food and clothing, and “services” such as transport and entertainment.

There are various factors that determine a country’s ability to produce wealth. They affect one another. Wealth depends greatly on a country’s natural resources. 37 . Some regions of the world are rich in natural resources with a fertile soil and a favorable climate; other regions possess perhaps only one of them; some, unfortunately, possess none. The USA has everything listed above. 38 The Sahara Desert, on the other hand, is one of the least wealthy.

Also, the ability to put natural resources to use counts, which goes without saying. 39 As we see, old countries that have trained so many skilled workers over centimes are better at producing wealth than those whose workers are mainly unskilled.

Besides, with their wealth increasing, people have more for saving and can put their savings into factories and machines, which, in turn, will help workers to produce more goods. 40 A. That means wealth itself also produces wealth.

B. No wonder it is one of the wealthiest regions of the world. C. Natural resources are equally distributed around the world. D. And next comes the technical efficiency of a country’s people. E. You may ask what factors contribute to a country’s standard of living F. They include coal, oil, gas, gold, other minerals, water supply and so on.

G. But that doesn’t make it a most wealthy country because it’s often hit by disasters. 第三部分:英语知识运用 (共两节满分45分)

M: Anyway, we can at least try. If they don't listen, we'll just pick up the phone and call the police.
